Men's Soccer Draws with Regis, 1-1, in Double Overtime

PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College men's soccer team battled the Pride of Regis College to a 1-1 double-overtime draw on Monday afternoon in non-conference action. With today's result, the AMCATS set their record at 0-2-1, while the Pride now sits at 3-2-1.

TWO BY TWO

Tonight's game marked the third overtime game in the six-year meeting of the two schools. With tonight's tie, the series record between Anna Maria and Regis is now 2-2-2. The last tie was on September 18th 2013—a 2-2 double-overtime draw at Anna Maria.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After two quick scores in the first 10 minutes of the game, the physical battle slowed down and neither team could find the back of the net. Anna Maria played a stronger first half, holding a 9-5 advantage in shots, but the Pride came out of halftime stronger, taking an 11-5 lead in shots in the second half and a 5-2 advantage during the 20 minutes of overtime.

Freshman James Bowhile (Worcester, Mass.) recorded a game-high five shots on the day for Anna Maria.

SCORING

First Half: The Pride needed just 3:37 to net their first goal, as the Regis team was awarded a free-kick from 30-yards out. Graham Sutherland (North Kingston, R.I.) sent the ball into the scrum in front of the net, where Christian Mukala (Malden, Mass.) poked it in through the outstretched hands of Anna Maria goalkeeper Patrick Thornberg (Wayland, Mass.).

In the 10th minute, the AMCATS were awarded a penalty kick, which Christopher Mattioli (Sturbridge, Mass.), buried. Mattioli's shot was low and to the left; Regis goalkeeper Manny Santiago (Bristol, Conn.) guessed wrong and dove to the right.

NETMINDERS

Thornberg got the start for Anna Maria but played just the first half, giving way to Elliot Kuzma for the final 65 minutes. Kuzma earned the decision and tallied saves on all seven shots-on-goal he faced.

Santiago went the distance for Regis, making seven saves on the day.

WHAT'S NEXT

The AMCATS return to action on Saturday as they open Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action against Mount Ida at 11:00 a.m. at AMCAT Field.
