Men's Baksetball: AMCATS Downed by Colby College in Season Opener

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Colby College rode a second half surge to an 83-61 victory over Ann Maria College in the opening round of the Hampton Inn Classic on Friday evening at the Tripp Athletic Center.

Colby (1-0) was fueled by the strong play of their sophomore class. Center Chris Hudnut (Chevy Chase, Md) recorded 21 points on 7-14 shooting, eight rebounds and two blocks. Classmate Luke Westman (Newtown, Mass.) recorded a double-double with 13 scores and 10 caroms, while Patrick Stewart (Bangor, Maine) and Ryan Jann Westford, Mass.) put home 14 points apiece.

Anna Maria (0-1) had two players score in double figures. Sophomore Patrick Bradanese (Billerica, Mass.) splashed 4-5 three pointers to lead the AMCats in scoring with 14 points, while freshman forward Trevon Farley (Lawrence, Mass.) generated 13 points and grabbed five rebounds. Junior guard Hugh Daye (Worcester, Mass.) distributed a game-high ten assists.

Stewart converted from downtown for three of his 10 first half points to give the Mules a 16-7 lead with 14:35 left in the first.  Anna Maria countered with a 10-2 run sparked by two three pointers from junior guard Corey Pryor (Whitinsville, Mass.).

Holding a 36-31 advantage at halftime, Colby opened up the second half with a 19-6 run. The AMCats attempted to generate a comeback but were overpowered down low. The Mules scored 20 of their 47 points in the second half between the blocks.

Colby advances to the championship game of the Hampton Inn Classic, which will be against the victor of the Elms College and UMass Dartmouth game taking place this evening. Anna Maria will be playing in the consolation game.
