Men’s Basketball Earns First Victory of the Season

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Anna Maria College's sharp shooting lifted them to a 79-68 win over Elms College in the consolation game of the Hampton Inn Class on Saturday afternoon.

Anna Maria (1-1) guard Hugh Daye (Worcester, Mass.) averaged eight points, 6.5 assists and 3.5 steals to earn him a spot on the All-Tournament team. Against the Blazers, the junior scored 11 points, grabbed six boards and recorded six steals to lead the AMCATS. Senior Quantez Franklin (West Yarmouth, Mass.) put in 18 points and grabbed a team-high 15 caroms, while sophomore Tyler Delorey (Worcester, Mass.) chipped in 15 points.

Sophomore Jerry Buchanon (Windsor, Conn.) represented Elms (0-2) on the All-Tournament team. In two games, the sophomore guard averaged 16 points, 3.5 assists and 4.5 steals to lead the Blazers.  Buchanon put up 15 points, five assists and seven steals in the consolation game. Senior Isaiah Odunlami (Providence, R.I.) generated 19 points, including 7-9 from the stripe, and snagged a game-high 17 boards.

To start the game, Anna Maria came out as the aggressor.  Freshman Shaun Garner (Margate, Fla.) found Delorey for a basket mid way through the first half to give the AMCats a 21-13 lead.  With seconds remaining before the break, Franklin put home a basket off a Joseph Barillo (Dania Beach, Fla.) missed three pointer to increase their lead to 13 points.

Opening the second half, Anna Maria went on a 13-3 run, capped by a layup from Franklin. Delorey hit his second three ball of the game with 7:33 remaining to give the AMCATS a 24 point lead, their largest of the game.

With under a minute remaining, Odunlami cut the deficit to single digits after he converted the back half of a pair of free throws, but that was as close as the Blazers would come.

The Blazers attempted 24 more shots than their opponents, but they only converted on 28.6 percent of them, while the AMCats shot a blistering 51.7 percent from the floor.

Elm College returns to play when they travel to Keene State on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. contest, while Anna Maria hosts Becker College on Thursday at 7 p.m.
