Colonels march past AMCATS on Senior Day

PAXTON, Mass. (04.20.11) – Senior Jessie Koffman (Andover, Mass.) led all players with 11 points on six goals and five assists, as the Curry College women's lacrosse team defeated Anna Maria College by a score of 20-6 during Senior Day at AMCAT Field. The Colonels improve to 13-3 (8-3 TCCC) with the win, while the AMCATS fall to 2-13 (0-10 TCCC).

Anna Maria seniors Mackenzie Coakley (Millbury, Mass.), Sarah Moore (Holden, Mass.), Heidi Toce (Ashland, Mass.), and Crystal Torres (Southbridge, Mass.) were honored before playing in their final home game as part of the Senior Day festivities. Moore, Toce, and Torres were each founding members of the AMC women's lacrosse program, while Coakley joined the team in 2009. All four were recognized for their contributions to the Athletic Department and the College as exemplary student athletes.

Koffman led the charge for Curry, adding seven ground balls and three caused turnovers to her six goals and five assists. Senior Ashley Hansbury (Chelmsford, Mass.) led all players with seven goals and four draw controls to go along with seven ground balls in the win, while senior Kelly Champagne (Wolfeboro, N.H.) added five points on three goals and two helpers. Senior Maria Lynch (Billerica, Mass.) earned the win in net for the Colonels, improving to 13-3 on the year.

The AMCATS were led by junior Katie Schebel (Ludlow, Mass.) who had a team-high four goals and three draw controls in the loss. Senior Sarah Moore (Holden, Mass.) stood out on defense, tying for the team-lead with six ground balls, while also causing a game-high five turnovers. Junior Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass.) added one goal and six ground balls, while sophomore Sandy Acosta (Lawrence, Mass.) chipped-in with one goal. Freshman Fabienne Jules (Leominster, Mass.) made a game-high 14 saves, including 11 in the second half, during a losing effort for the AMCATS.

The Colonels opened the game on an 8-1 run, receiving three goals and two assists from Koffman in the opening 20 minutes of play, and never looked back.

Leading 11-4 at half, the Colonels came out of the break to score the opening eight goals of the second period to expand their lead to 19-4.

Schebel netted two goals in the final four minutes for the AMCATS before the Colonels ran out the clock to seal the 20-6 win.

The Colonels will return to action on Saturday when they travel to face Nichols at 11:00 pm, while the AMCATS take to the field again on Monday when they hit the road to battle Colby-Sawyer in their conference finale.
