AMCATS erupt for 17 goals in win over Eagles

PAXTON, Mass. (04.04.11) – The Anna Maria College women's lacrosse team received two or more goals from seven different players as they earned their first win of the season with a 17-4 victory over non-conference opponent Daniel Webster College at AMCAT Field on Monday evening. The 17 goals are the second most in program history for the AMCATS, who are now 1-9 (0-6 TCCC) on the season, while the Eagles drop to 0-3 overall.

Junior Katie Schebel (Ludlow, Mass.) led all players with six points, three assists, and six draw controls on the night, adding three goals, four ground balls, and four caused turnovers during a strong all-around performance. Junior Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass.) scored a game-high four goals, while senior Sarah Moore (Holden, Mass.) grabbed seven ground balls and contributed a game-high five caused turnovers in the win. The AMCATS also received two goals apiece from junior Amelia Richard (Mashpee, Mass.), junior Kristina Breton (Worcester, Mass.), senior Crystal Torres (Southbridge, Mass.), senior Mackenzie Coakley (Millbury, Mass.), and sophomore Sandy Acosta (Lawrence, Mass.). Freshman goalkeeper Fabienne Jules (Leominster, Mass.) earned her first collegiate victory for the AMCATS, allowing just four goals in net for the AMCATS.

Senior Stephanie Zeman (Jefferson Township, N.J.) paced the Eagles with a team-high two points, two goals, five ground balls, and three caused turnovers in the loss. Sophomores Samantha Cotoni (Groton, Mass.) and Katie Rockefeller (Red Hook, N.Y.) each added one goal apiece for DWC, while freshman Kristi Carroll (Townsend, Mass.) collected a team-best three draw controls. Sophomore Laura Giannetti (Westminster, Mass.) took the loss in net for the Eagles despite making a game-high 18 saves on the night.

The AMCATS took control of the game right from the opening whistle, as Hevy grabbed the draw control and sprinted to the net to score the game's first goal after just nine seconds of action.

The AMCATS went on to score seven unanswered goals over the opening 20 minutes of play, as both Hevy and Richard contributed two goals each during the run, while Schebel added one goal and one assist.

The Eagles finally put a stop to the AMC run when Zeman netted her first goal of the game with 9:51 left in the first half, cutting the Anna Maria lead to 7-1.

After AMC's Sandy Acosta and DWC's Katie Rockefeller traded goals, Anna Maria's Katie Schebel completed the first half scoring with an unassisted tally with just 31 seconds left in the opening period, sending the AMCATS into the break holding a 9-2 advantage.

Coming out of the intermission, the AMCATS scored three unanswered goals in the first eight minutes of the second period, including two tallies by Breton, to build a comfortable 12-2 advantage.

After Cotoni answered with a free position goal for the visitors, the AMCATS sealed the victory by closing the game with a 5-1 run, including two scores by Hevy.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday at 4:00 pm, as the Eagles host Thomas, and the AMCATS welcome conference-foe New England College to AMCAT Field.
