Murphy sets record as Chargers defeat AMCATS in TCCC finale

NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 25, 2011 – Colby-Sawyer junior Brittney Murphy (Woburn, Mass.) scored four times, setting a new Chargers single season record for goals scored with 68, in Monday's 22-6 win over Anna Maria. Colby-Sawyer, who celebrated senior day, improves to 8-9 overall and 6-5 in TCCC play. Anna Maria dips to 2-14 overall and 0-11 in the conference.

The teams exchanged the first four goals of the contest before Murphy's first tally of the game gave the home team a 3-2 edge. After a goal from senior Samantha Draper (Duxbury, Mass.) gave Colby-sawyer a 4-2 lead, Anna Maria sophomore Sandy Acosta (Lawrence, Mass.) brought the AMCATS within one with her second score of the game at 21:42.

Draper then put in her second goal of the game, but Anna Maria's junior Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass.) scored two straight to knot the game at 5-5.

Colby-Sawyer then ran away with the game by scoring the next 10 goals before the AMCATS ended the half with a goal. The Chargers led 15-6 at the break.

The Chargers' defense picked up in the second half as they allowed just four shots and no goals. Colby-Sawyer added seven more goals in the second en route to the 22-6 victory. The home team held a 44-15 edge in shots for the game.

Draper led Colby-Sawyer with five goals, while Murphy finished with four goals and two assists. Junior Lyndsay French (Ipswich, Mass.) had three goals and three assists in the win. Senior Katherine Lee (Clinton, N.Y.) also added a goal.

Acosta led the AMCATS with three goals. Hevy added two, while junior Katie Schebel added the other goal.

Sophomore Ekta Sampson (Hyde Park, Vt.) earned the victory for the Chargers, while teammate Liz Malenfant (Siasconset, Mass.) made four saves. Anna Maria junior keeper Fabienne Jules (Leominster, Mass.) made 19 saves in the loss. 

Colby-Sawyer travels to Curry on Saturday for a TCCC quarterfinal contest with the Colonels at 3:00 pm. Curry defeated the Chargers 15-11 in the regular season. Anna Maria travels to Elms for a non-conference tilt on Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
