Hevy notches six goals in loss to Mustangs

Thursday, March 31, 2011 (Newton, Massachusetts) – The Mount Ida College women's lacrosse team took a 3-0 lead to open up the first half and never looked back capturing their fourth victory of the season winning 15-12 over visiting non-league opponent Anna Maria College Thursday afternoon on a snowy day in Newton, Massachusetts.  Mustang senior Jen Thompson (Easton, MD/Easton) tallied five goals, her second consecutive game with five scores, propelling Mount Ida to an overall record of 4-4 while the AmCats stay winless falling to 0-8. 

Thompson got the game rolling in the opening ticks of the contest on a dish from senior Danielle Chuba (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) for the 1-0 advantage.  Chuba scored the second goal of the game on an unassisted conversion for a 2-0 lead through the first five minutes of the contest.  Senior Becky Tisbert (Cambridge, VT/Lamoille Union) finished the run on a successful free position attempt making it 3-0 early in the opening stanza.

The visitors eventually got in on the scoring converting their first goal of the game on a good free position attempt from junior Katie Schebel (Ludlow, MA/Agawam), her first of four during the contest, making it 3-1 in favor of the hosts.

Mount Ida rallied off the next four goals starting with two scores by Thompson, both assisted by senior Alexandra Sarno (East Patchogue, NY/Bellport), making it 5-1 Mustangs at the 18 minute mark.  Chuba and freshman standout Ebony Mills (Harrison, ME/Oxford Hills) followed with unassisted goals for a commanding 7-1 advantage.

The AmCats never backed off scoring the next two, both on unassisted bids from junior Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, MA/North Brookfield), her first of a game high six goals, pulling within five down 7-3 with 7:08 to go before the midway point.

Mount Ida's Sarno added the next two scores of the contest, one unassisted and the other from a free position attempt, going ahead 9-3 with just over six minutes to go before the break. 

After a yellow card handed out to the Mustangs, the visitors converted a man up goal on a free position attempt from Schebel making it 9-4 at the four minute mark.  Right before the halftime horn, Anna Maria senior Crystal Torres (Southbridge, MA/Southbridge) notched her first and only goal of the game heading into the locker room down 9-5. 

The Mustangs opened the second half with an unassisted Tisbert score making it 10-5 in favor of the hosts.

Following another yellow card by Mount Ida, the visitors added three goals, two on man-up chances and all on free position attempts from the stick of Hevy pulling within two goals (10-8) at the 24:29 mark.

Thompson and Chuba countered for the Mustangs scoring one each immediately following the AmCats surge to pull ahead 12-8 with just under 20 minutes remaining in the contest.

The visitors wouldn't give up scoring two more starting with an unassisted man-up goal from senior Sarah Moore (Holden, MA/St. Mary's) for her only tally of the contest making it 12-9 Mustangs.  Schebel added another on a free position attempt pulling within two scores down 12-10 with 14:27 remaining in the game.

Sarno followed for the Mustangs not even 30 seconds later with her third goal of the game on a dish from Tisbert to widen the margin to 13-10.

The AmCats countered with 11:26 showing on the clock on an unassisted goal from Schebel good for her fourth and final tally of the contest pulling within two scores for the third time of the contest making it 13-11.

Mount Ida added two more with four minutes to go before the final horn on scores from Thompson on a dish from Sarno and another on an unassisted bid from Mills leading 15-11 at the 3:46 mark.

It was all but over at this point with the AmCats only able to notch one more goal for the game on an unassisted score from Hevy handing Mount Ida the 15-12 non-conference victory.

The Mustangs dominated in the ground ball game picking up 40 to the AmCats 26.  Mount Ida also controlled the middle circle winning 16-29 face-offs and collecting 17 draw controls.

Mount Ida netminder junior Katherine Chousa (Norwood, MA/Norwood) denied eight visiting attempts while AmCats goaltender freshman Fabienne Jules (Leominster, MA/St. Bernard's Central Catholic) stopped seven Mustang shots.

Mount Ida will host their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) home contest this Saturday against visiting St. Joseph's College (ME) with game time slated for 4:00 p.m.
