Men's Lacrosse Downed By Clark, 9-2

Worcester, Mass. – Sophomore Jeffrey Wasson (Buckhorn, Ontario) recorded his third hat trick in as many games and host Clark University responded from a slow start to score eight unanswered goals en route to a 9-2 win over Worcester area rival Anna Maria on Monday evening.

With the win the Cougars improve to 2-1 on the season, while the AMCATS slip to 1-3 under new head coach Mark Lange.

Anna Maria actually scored the game's first goal on extra-man opportunity less than five minutes into the game by Chris Summers (Long Valley, N.J.).

After posting their first scoreless quarter of the season, Clark rebounded with a three goal second stanza on two goals from Phil Winslow (Providence, R.I.) and another from Nick Figliola (Weston, Conn.) to take a 3-1 halftime edge.

Clark then opened the second half with a five goal third quarter to put the game away. The Cougars got all three of Wasson's goal in the quarter along with markers from Graham Werner (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) and Figliola.

Brad Peterson (North Kingstown, R.I.) scored an unassisted tally for Anna Maria midway through the fourth quarter, but Clark answered with an excellent score from freshman Keegan Callahan (Tewksbury, Mass.) moments later to wrap up the game. Callahan forced a turnover deep in the AMCAT zone, scooped up the ground ball and fired a rocket past Anna Maria netminder Andrew Ellis (Fitchburg, Mass.) to notch his first collegiate score.

Kevin Ranta (Beverly, Mass.), making his first start of the season for the Cougars, stopped five shots in picking up his first win of the season, while Ellis, who made several spectacular saves, turned back ten.

In addition to Wasson, Chris Johnson (Amherst, Mass.) ended with a season-high four assists, while Winslow and Figliola each had a pair of goals.

Clark will return to the field on Saturday when they visit Skidmore. Anna Maria gets right back to action on Wednesday when they travel to Regis for a 4:00 p.m. start.
