Chargers hand AMCATS first conference defeat, 70-67

NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 15, 2011 – Junior Will Bardaglio (Wayne, Maine) scored a career-high 31 points to lead the Colby-Sawyer's men's basketball team past Anna Maria, 70-67 on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers even their overall record to 7-7, while moving to 3-0 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference. Anna Maria drops to 8-7 overall and is 2-1 in TCCC action. The first half was back and forth, featuring six ties and eight lead changes. Neither team could break out to a lead greater than five points. Bardaglio made 4-7 from beyond the arc, while sophomore Corey Willis (Easton, Mass.) knocked down the other three point attempt for the Chargers in the first frame. Anna Maria also was hot from beyond the arc in the first, as senior Junior De La Hoz (Lawrence, Mass.) and senior Chris Pinsonault (Marlboro, Mass.) each knocked down a pair of treys en route to a mark of 45%. With the Chargers leading 35-34 at the break, Anna Maria came out firing in the second to take their biggest lead of the game of seven, 45-38 five minutes in. Colby-Sawyer battled back to regain the lead three minutes later after Bardaglio was fouled attempting a three. He calmly poured in all three to give the Chargers a 46-45 lead. The rest of the contest was a mirror of the first as both teams regained the lead several more times. Down five with two minutes to play, Anna Maria battled back to cut the deficit to one at 68-67 with 14 seconds left. Bardaglio was sent to the line once again and he iced the game 70-67 by making his eighth and ninth free throw of the contest. Bardaglio poured in a career-high 31 points including six three-pointers in the Colby-Sawyer win. He also went 9-9 from the free throw stripe, tying a school record for free throw percentage with at least eight attempts. Freshman John Roberts (Casco, Maine) recorded a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Fellow freshman Robbie Burke (Cheshire, Mass.) also tallied a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Corey Willis (Easton, Mass.) added 11 points. De La Hoz registered 12 points and added a game best seven assists for the AMCATS. Sophomore Anthony Click (Springfield, Mass.) also had 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Junior Brad Peterson (North Kingstown, R.I.) had 10 points, seven rebounds and four blocks.
