AMCATS Fall To Daniel Webster

Nashua –The Daniel Webster women's lacrosse team set a new season record for wins with a 19-14 victory over Anna Maria in a regional matchup Wednesday at Eagle Field.

Eveline Lopes (Dorchester, Mass.), Alexa Quintiliani (Manchester, Conn.) and Kaylea Parkin (Red Hook, N.Y.) added two goals apiece as the fourth-year Eagles improved to 5-7 overall in their final season as a Division III independent, surpassing the 4-7 record posted by the 2010 squad. DWC joins the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) next season when the league begins sponsoring a six-team women's lacrosse championship.

Katie Schebel (Ludlow, Mass.) led the AMCATS (1-11) with seven goals and two assists along with a game-high 15 draw controls and five ground balls. Mackenzie Coakley (Millbury, Mass.) added three scores while Sandy Acosta (Lawrence, Mass.) notched two.

Teresa Moscati (Buffalo, N.Y.) set a program single season goalkeeping record at DWC earning her fifth win in goal, making seven stops. Marlena Donjacour (San Francisco, Cal.) stopped 12 shots for Anna Maria.

Samantha Cotoni (Groton, Mass.) added six groundballs for the winners while rookie Allyssa Marson (Augusta, Maine) tallied five grounders and a game-high four caused turnovers.

The two squads put together a wild flurry of punches and counterpunches over the first 30 minutes, garnering five ties and six lead changes including a pace of nearly a goal per minute over the first 10. The Eagles would finally take control with an 8-2 run over the first 12 minutes of the second to pull away.

Bates would notch five scores in the opening half while Schebel countered with three. The teams would forge ties at three, four, five, six and seven, before Bates would bury three consecutive from the free position circle in the final 7:37 including the last with nine seconds to go before the half for a 9-7 Eagle lead.

Schebel notched her fourth 44 seconds into the second for a 9-8 game but Lopes answered with 26:52 remaining, Ritz followed 24 seconds later and Bates added her sixth of the day 30 seconds after for a 12-8 lead, the largest of the game at that point.

Coakley followed off a Schebel feed 37 seconds later and Acosta pulled the AMCATS back within two (12-10) with 24:48 left.

But Parkin scored unassisted with 23:22 to go starting a quick 5-0 run from DWC that included strikes from Bates, Quintiliani, Ritz and Bates again. By the time the dust cleared after that five minute span, the Eagles held a 17-10 lead and wouldn't look back.

Amelia Richard (Mashpee, Mass.) and Schebel stopped the bleeding with back-to-back scores 50 seconds apart with 12:15 to go, but Quintiliani followed with her second with 5:58 left to ice it.

Schebel would tack on her final two scores while Eagle senior Tracie Busch (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) netted her first of the season and second of her career with three minutes to go for DWC.

The Eagles would finish with decisive advantages in shots on goal (31-21) and ground balls (41-18), while Anna Maria owned a clear advantage on draws (24-13) and fouls (7-23).
