Monks Charge Past Lady AMCATS in GNAC Match-up

Paxton, Mass – AMCAT senior Katie Schebel (Ludlow, Mass) led all players with six goals but it wasn't enough as the Monks of Saint Joseph's College defeated Anna Maria College by the score of 21-9 during a Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's lacrosse matchup at AMCAT Field on Saturday afternoon. The win improves St. Joe's to 2-0 (1-0 GNAC) on the year, while the AMCATS drop to 0-1 (0-1 GNAC) with the loss.

The Monks were led by Amelia Santos' (Beverly, Mass.) game-high nine points, leading all players with five assists on the day. Anneka Adame (San Diego, Calif.) added five goals and teammate Cassie Diplock (Augusta, Maine.) scored another four goals on the day.

Schebel finished with 7 points for Anna Maria while senior Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass.) had 3 points on two goals and an assist. Junior Sandy Acosta (Lawrence, Mass.) chipped in with a goal and an assist and senior Mackenzie Coakley (Millbury, Mass.) registered an assist.

Anna Maria jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 2:48 into the game, Schebel scored the seasons' first goal off a nifty pass from Sandy Acosta. Monk's forward Diplock tied the game just half a minute later. Anna Maria struck again when Hevy scored an unassisted goal at 4:52 to take a 2-1 advantage. Exactly one minute later St. Joe's tied the game at two with a goal from Anneka Adame.  Amada Hevy scored her second goal of the game at 7:33 to take the 3-2 lead.

St. Joe's went on a 6-0 run over the next five minutes to take control of the game and an 8-3 lead. Santos' had two of the team's six goals. Anna Maria got two goals back when Schebel scored twice to cut the lead to 10-5. The St. Joe's offensive pressure was too much for the AMCATS as the Monks once again reeled off another six unanswered goals.  Anneka Adame scored three of the six for the Monks to increase the lead to 15-5.

Anna Maria made one last push, with a 3-0 run to start the second half. Schebel picked up two goals on assists from Hevy and Coakley while Acosta scored unassisted to make it a 15-8 game. But the Monks battled back with another 6-0 run to put the game away.

AMCAT goalkeeper Marlena Donjacour (San Francisco, Calif.) made 16 saves in the loss while Haley Nason and Elizabeth Giacchino combined for 6 saves in the win.

Anna Maria returns to action on Tuesday afternoon when they host Becker College in a 4:00 pm match-up.
