Lasers Tag AMCATS in Doubleheader

Paxton, Mass. – The Lady AMCATS of Anna Maria College were downed by the Lasell Lasers in Great Northeast Athletic Conference softball action today at AMCAT Field. On a cold and windy day the Lasers swept AMC 10-0 in game one and 5-2 in the night cap.

GAME 1 – Anna Maria 0 Lasell 10

Lasell (7-21, 7-9 GNAC) scored the only run they would need in the top of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Rachelle Haas (Middletown, Mass.) reach third base after being hit by a pitch, a passed ball and a balk. She came home on Talia DeChiara (Kingston, Mass.) single.

Anna Maria (0-24, 0-16 GNAC) leadoff hitter Nichole Lowe led off the bottom half of the inning with a single to right field. Lasell pitcher Alison Saluti (Braintree, Mass.) then struck out the side to end the inning.

After a scoreless second inning Lasell put 4 runs across the plate in both the 3rd and 4th innings and added a single run in the 5th for the 10-0 win.

Anna Maria could only muster two hits off Saluti, Mary Moroski (Worcester, Mass.) had the second hit in the 4th inning with a pinch hit double to right center, but Saluti again struck out the side, the junior finished the day with 9 strikeouts.

Lasell was paced by DeChiara who went 3-for-4 with an RBI and 3 runs scored and freshman Mary Fontaine (Nashua, NH) who drilled a 2 run home run the left center field in the third inning and finished the game going 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.

GAME 2 - Anna Maria 2 Lasell 5

In game two the AMCATS crossed the plate first in the bottom of the second inning. With one out junior Tabitha Ruggeri (Sturbridge, Mass.) beat out an infield single and then stole second base. After advancing to third on a fly ball Ruggeri came in to score on a Melissa Stedman (Mason, NH) single to the right side.

Lasell was able to pick up a two spot in the top of the second inning,  with runners on second and third centerfielder Santina Antoshak (Closter, NJ) singled home a run and Mary Fontaine drove in a run with a groundout to shortstop to take the 2-1 lead.

After a scoreless 4th and 5th inning Lasell was able to capitalize on a couple of costly errors by AMC in the top of the 6th inning and add three runs to the lead.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, senior Mary Moroski delivered her 25th career home run, crushing a ball deep over the left center field fence for the 5-2 final.

Ruggeri and Stedman finished the game with two hits apiece for AMC, while Jacqui Saluti (Braintree, Mass.) collected two hits for the Lasers.

Sophomore Cassie Wadden (Brookfield, Mass.) went the distance for the win, striking out 4 batters, Nichole Lowe suffered the loss for Anna Maria.

AMC travels to Elms College for a non-conference match-up tomorrow at 3:30 pm.
