Cadets Sweep AMCATS in Two

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University baseball team hosted Anna Maria College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Garrity Field. The Cadets swept the AMCATS with an 8-0 win in game one and a come-from-behind 2-1 victory in game two. Norwich improves to 12-17 overall and 6-4 in GNAC play with the sweep while Anna Maria falls to 7-29 overall and 0-12 in conference.

GAME ONE

In game one Norwich took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI fielder's choice by senior catcher Brandon Pedley. The Cadets added another run in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by freshman third baseman Eamon Smith for a 2-0 lead.

 

In the bottom of the fourth sophomore right fielder Kevin Lynch delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded to stretch the lead to 4-0. Sophomore shortstop Mike Lesco chipped in an RBI single and senior third baseman Matt Sirois lifted a sacrifice fly to right field for a 6-0 advantage.

 

Sophomore right fielder Dustin Spatz added an RBI groundout in the bottom of the fifth to cap the scoring.

 

Senior Kaleb Smith continued the streak of hot Norwich pitching with a strong six inning performance. He allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out one batter. With the win he improves to 1-3 on the season.

GAME TWO

Anna Maria kicked off scoring in game two with a sacrifice bunt from Joseph Fahey (Auburn, Mass.) that scored Trevor Brown (Gardner, Mass.) to give the AMCATS a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.

The Cadets had to rally, down 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth senior center fielder LaShawn Thomas lifted a two-out RBI double to deep center field to score freshman second baseman Brady Doherty (who singled earlier in the frame).

 

In the bottom of the sixth of a 1-1 game sophomore right fielder Jacob Barlow delivered a sacrifice fly to center to score Sirois from third and give Norwich its first lead of the game, 2-1.

 

Freshman Andrew Fisher shut down the AMCAT bats in the top of the seventh to cap a complete-game effort and improve to 2-2 on the season. He allowed one run (unearned) on six hits and one walk while striking out six.

Matthew Leahey (Rutland, Mass.) took the loss on the mound for Anna Maria. He pitched six innings scattering seven hits, two runs and a game high eight strikeouts.

 

WHAT'S NEXT?

Norwich is next in action on Tuesday, April 25th for a non-conference doubleheader against Plattsburgh State. Those games are set for 3:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. at Garrity Field. The AMCATS will host Saint Joseph's College of Maine at the New England Baseball Complex on Saturday, April 29th for a senior day doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
