Trinity Tops Women's Basketball, 64-46

PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College women's basketball team dropped a 64-46 non-conference decision to the Bantams of Trinity College on Tuesday evening in the Fuller Center.

The win boosts the Bantams above .500 at 12-11 overall, while Anna Maria falls to 8-16 on the season.

AMCAT LEADERS

 Anna Maria was led by junior guard Deja Taitt (Cambia Heights, N.Y.) with nine points. Juniors Christina Gauvin (Dudley, Mass.) and Nicole Mareiro (Acushnet, Mass.) and sophomore Kristina Russo (South Windsor, Conn.) all finished with eight points apiece.

TRINITY LEADERS

The Bantams saw a game-high double-double of 21 points and 14 rebounds from senior Mackenzie Griffin (Stamford, Conn.). Trinity also saw double-figure scoring performances from Sheena Landy (Durham, Conn.) and Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.), with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Bantams led from the gate, using a 48.5 percent effort from the floor along with 16 first-half field goals to hold a 40-29 lead at halftime. The AMCATS trailed by 10 points at the end of the first quarter but used a 14-9 run in the first part of the second quarter, capped by a three-pointer by Russo to cut the deficit to five points with 5:11 remaining in the half.

The Bantams would hold Anna Maria to just five more points in the half in the midst of their own 11-5 run to end the first half.

The third quarter would prove to be low-scoring, as neither team reached double-figures. Trinity finished with four field goals for eight points, while Anna Maria hit just three for seven.

The Bantams took their largest lead of the day at 19 points with 1:39 left to play in the fourth quarter following a three-pointer by senior Christina Raiti (Plainview, Conn.) en route to the 64-46 victory.

FINAL COMPARISONS

Trinity averaged a 44.8 percent shooting effort on the day (26-58), while Anna Maria finished 19-for-65 from the floor to clock in at a 29.2 percent efficiency. Anna Maria hit 7-of-32 from three-point range, while Trinity hit 2-of-10 from long-distance.

Trinity edged Anna Maria 28-24 in points in the paint and 14-12 in points off turnovers. Second-chance points also favored Trinity (10-6), as did fast-break points (6-2). The Bantams also held a 48-29 advantage in rebounds.

Anna Maria will host Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. for senior day. Tonight's victory marked the 2015-16 season finale for Trinity.
