Women's Basketball Comes Up Short at Norwich, 92-70

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Five Norwich University women's basketball players scored in double-digits as the Cadets overwhelmed Anna Maria College, 92-70, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

The win pushes Norwich to 9-7 on the year and 2-2 in the league, while the AMCATS fall to 6-8 overall and 0-2 in the GNAC.

AMCAT LEADERS

Junior Christina Gauvin (Dudley, Mass.) led the AMCATS with 20 points, while junior Nicole Mareiro (Acushnet, Mass.) posted 19 points for Anna Maria. Junior Deja Taitt (Cambia Heights, N.Y.) contributed 16 points along with six assists and four steals in the loss.

NORWICH LEADERS

Sophomore guard Arianna Harrison (Vernon, Vt.) and junior forward Heather LeBlanc (Sanford, Maine) both collected double-doubles with LeBlanc putting up a team-high 17 points and 16 rebounds and Harrison contributing 12 points and 14 rebounds for the Cadets.

Sophomore guard Shyann Josler (Thetford, Vt.) contributed 13 points with freshman Vanessa Fleury (Lebanon, N.H.) and junior Leanne Winans (Hudson, N.H.) scoring 16 and 13 points, respectively.  

HOW IT HAPPENED

Norwich jumped out to a 25-16 lead in the first 10 minutes of tip-off before adding 23 more points in the second quarter for the 48-33 lead the break. Anna Maria looked to get back into contention in the second half, scoring 27 points on 43.8 percent shooting from the field with five coming from beyond the arc, but the Cadets fended out the AMCATS' late attack by scoring 30 points in the third quarter to make it a 28-point lead at the 2:27 mark before putting the game out of reach in the fourth for the 92-70 win.

FINAL COMPARISONS

The Cadets scored 40 points in the paint along with 25 points on second chances, while Anna Maria led the battle from beyond the arc, hitting 41.7 percent (10-24) from the three-point range and scored 13 points off of turnovers.

The AMCATS return to action on Monday when they host Johnson & Wales University at 7:00 p.m. in GNAC action.
