Women's Basketball Stumbles at Suffolk, 73-45

BOSTON—The Suffolk University women's basketball team downed the visiting AMCATS of Anna Maria College 73-45 on Thursday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

The win brings Suffolk to 11-7 overall and 3-2 in league play, while loss drops Anna Maria to 6-12 on the season and 0-6 against GNAC opponents.

AMCAT LEADERS

Senior Samantha Parker (Athol, Mass.) had a career-day, scoring 11 points and tallying 13 rebounds for the first double-double of her career. Junior Chirstina Gauvin (Dudley, Mass.) was the only other AMCAT to finish in double figures, as she hit five field goals, including two three-pointers, to total 12 points.

SUFFOLK LEADERS

The Rams saw 15 point and 17 rebounds from forward Chelsea Campellone. The AMCATS were able to hold Suffolk's top scorer this season to just three field goals in 11 tries—in her last outing, Campellone scored 42 points while shooting 16-22 from the floor against Lasell.

Caitlyn Caramello aided Suffolk in the win with 18 points, followed by 12 points off the bench from Georgia Bourikas.

Suffolk made 27 free-throws in the game and attempted 38. Campellone led the Rams with nine points at the charity stripe, followed by Caramello with six.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Suffolk grabbed the tip and used it to its advantage as Caramello scored the first hoop of the night on a put back. The Rams rolled from there, taking a 9-0 lead before Anna Maria's Nicole Mareiro (Acushnet, Mass.) swished a triple to put the AMCATS on the board at 5:35. Over the latter portion of the first frame, Suffolk's points doubled and the host held an 18-7 edge after one.

In the second quarter, the combination of a hot Gauvin from long range for the AMCATS and a struggling Suffolk offense from the floor made things interesting as the score moved to 18-13 in favor of the Rams. Thanks to an impressive 10-of-12 performance at the charity stripe, the hosts were able to hold onto a 32-21 advantage at the half.

The Rams pilled on the points in the second half and took they took their largest lead of the night, 71-39, with 2:30 left on the clock in the fourth quarter before closing out the game, 73-45.

FINAL COMPARISONS

Anna Maria's starting lineup combined for just 21 points on the day, while Suffolk's started five totaled 51 points.

As a team, Suffolk shot 35.6 percent from the floor, 71.1 percent from the line and outrebounded Anna Maria, 54-46. The Rams also held a slim advantage in points in the paint, 24-22, and capitalized off turnovers (16-10) and second chances (11-9).
