McClune Leads AMCATS past Wheelock, Clinch #1 NECC Seed

BOSTON, MA – Senior forward Marybeth McClune (Worcester, MA/Burncoat HS) tallied a pair of goals to lead the Anna Maria College field hockey team to a 4-1 victory over host Wheelock College this evening in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) match at Winsor Field in Boston, MA.  The AMCATS win their sixth straight match to improve to 11-7 overall, including a perfect 5-0 in league play, while the Wildcats fall to 2-9 and 2-3.

With the win the AMCATS have secured the number one seed in the upcoming NECC conference tournament.
McClune broke into the scoring column just 3:04 into the contest for Anna Maria when freshman right wing Kayla Lapierre (Worcester, MA) sent a pass into the circle, where freshman center forward Kylie Dalbec (Portland, ME) redirected it to the front of the cage for McClune's league-leading 16th goal of the season.  Wheelock knotted the score at 1-1 with just 15 ticks left on the clock in the first half when senior forward Despina Savvoulides (Norwalk, CT) converted her fourth penalty stroke of the season for her team-leading 12th goal of the year.
McClune reclaimed the lead for the AMCATS just 1:31 into the second half when she collected the ball in a scrum in front of the cage and scored on a backhand to give the visitors a 2-1 edge.  Sophomore forward Nichole Lowe (Saugus, MA) was credited with the helper.  Senior midfielder Brooke Denver (New Britain, CT) gave Anna Maria a 3-1 cushion when she converted a penalty stroke of her own at the 45:32 mark.  Dalbec capped the scoring for the AMCATS, after receiving a short cross in front of the cage, with her ninth goal of the year at 62:56 for a 4-1 margin.
Freshman keeper Mary Kate Breen (Londonderry, NH) earned the victory for Anna Maria, her eleventh of the season with five saves, while junior goalie Michelle Greene (Mansfield, MA) stopped four shots for the Wildcats.
Wheelock will be in action again on Thursday, October 25 when it hosts Clark University at 8:00 p.m., while the AMCATS close out their regular season on October 26 in Nashua, NH with a 4:00 p.m. match vs. Daniel Webster College.
