Lady AMCATS Downed by Blazers in Women’s Lacrosse

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College sophomore attacker Lauren Mazza (Agawam, Mass.) netted nine goals and the Blazers scored 13 in the first half to highlight a 20-7 victory over Anna Maria College in Tuesday evening's non-league women's lacrosse game at Leary Field.

With the win Elms improves to 2-5 on the season, while Anna Maria moves to 0-6 overall. The win was Elms' first double-digit win over an opponent since the Blazers beat Becker College, 21-11 on April 19, 2008 in Leicester, Mass.

Anna Maria drew first blood just 29 seconds into the contest when Kayla Jansen (Pittsfield, Mass.) scored but Elms answered with seven consecutive goals in a 13-minute span. Following a score by the AMCATS' Sandy Acosta (Lawrence, Mass.), Elms added six more markers to give the Blazers a 13-2 lead at intermission.

Mazza scored six of her goals in the first 30 minutes of play while senior attacker Chelsey Grabowski (South Hadley, Mass.) and sophomore attacker Nora McDonough (South Hadley, Mass.) added two scores each.

Junior midfielder Brianna Lyons (Canton, Mass.), sophomore defender Kate Borisova (Chicopee, Mass.) and freshman defender Emily Brown (Agawam, Mass.) also found the back of the net in the opening frame.

The second half saw Anna Maria's Emily Adriaansen (Pepperell, Mass.) score twice, while Acosta, Katherine Landanno (Winchendon, Mass.) and Kylie Dalbec (Portland, Maine) each scored once to highlight five goals by the AMCATS in the second half.

Elms, however, receive three more scores from Mazza and one apiece from Lyons, Grabowski, McDonough and senior defender Marcia Norat (Brockton, Mass.) to cap a 20-7 triumph for the Blazers.

Lyons was dominant in the midfield, picking up three assists to go along with nine groundballs. Senior goalkeeper Catherine Leonard (Chicopee, Mass.) was stellar between the pipes en route to her first win notching seven saves.

Dalbec led Anna Maria with five groundball pickups, while net-minder Shannon Donovan (Marlborough, Mass.) made 13 saves in the losing effort.

Elms opens conference action on Saturday, April 6 at Becker College at 1:00 p.m. in Leicester, Mass.
