Football Falls To Coast Guard In Overtime

PAXTON, MA - On Saturday, September 14th the Anna Maria College football team hosted the Coast Guard Academy Bears for their first home game of the season. The AMCATS lost the game 52-45 in overtime.

Coast Guard took the early lead in the first quarter, scoring just five minutes into the game. Jamal Cariglia would answer for the AMCATS, scoring a one yard touchdown. Ryan Kents extra point opportunity would tie the game up at 7 points a piece. Kent would be back on the box score with just two minutes left to play in the first quarter scoring a field goal to give the AMCATS a three point lead over the Bears.

Going tit for tat throughout the second quarter, the AMCATS would hang in with the Bears before giving up two touchdowns at the end of the second half to give the Bears an 11 point lead as the first half came to a close. The AMCATS only touchdown of the second quarter came from an 18 yard touchdown from David Robinson just four minutes into the quarter.

Trailing 28-17 at the start of the second half, the Bears would drop yet another touchdown just fifteen seconds into the third quarter increasing their lead to 34-17. However the AMCATS would go on to score three touchdowns throughout the remainder of the third quarter to take a 3 point lead over the Bears. Kevin Acosta Jr., Jamal Cariglia and Justin Oliver each scored touchdowns in the AMCATS third quarter comeback.

Kevin Acosta Jr. would increase the AMCATS lead to 45-35 just under three minutes into the final quarter however the Bears would score a touchdown followed by a late field goal to tie the game up at 45 a piece sending the game into overtime. The Bears would score a touchdown during their overtime drive however the AMCATS would give up an interception during their drive opportunity resulting in a 52-45 loss to the Coast Guard Academy.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Ryan Russell threw for 432 yards with four touchdowns on the day.
  • Justin Oliver led the AMCATS receiving with 131 yards and 1 touchdown.
  • Di'Angelo Jean Pierre has recorded an interception in both games so far this season for the AMCATS.
  • The AMCATS record 3 interceptions against the Bears.

COMING UP:

The AMCATS will be back in action on Saturday, September 21st where they will travel to New York Maritime for a non-conference matchup. Opening kickoff is set for 1:00pm.
