Football Opens Season With 41-13 Win Over Owls
WESTFIELD, MA - On Friday, September 6th the Anna Maria College Football team traveled to Westfield, Ma to take on the Westfield State University Owls for their first game of the 2024 season. The AMCATS won the game 41-13.
After a defensive battle to start the first quarter, the AMCATS were the first on the board with just under two minutes left to play in the first quarter. The AMCATS first touchdown of the season came off a 5 yard run from Ryan Russell, giving the AMCATS the lead as the quarter came to a close.
The AMCATS kept their momentum going after scoring just three minutes into the second quarter. Justin Brown would be the one to run in the AMCATS second touchdown of the night, giving them the 14-0 lead over the Owls. The next touchdown of the game wouldn't come for another ten minutes however it would be David Robinson scoring off an 85 yard pass from Ryan Russell to stack the AMCATS lead up to 21-0 with just over 3 minutes left to play in the first half.
The third quarter wouldn't see much action as neither team would score for almost the entirety of the quarter. Unfortunately the Owls managed to score their first touchdown of the game with just 46 seconds left to play in the quarter, cutting the AMCATS lead back down to just two touchdowns.
Heading into the final quarter of the evening, the AMCATS started things quick, setting the tone with a touchdown just two minutes into play. Delvin Pryor would score the AMCATS fourth touchdown off a 47 yard pass from Russell. Keeping things rolling, the AMCATS struck again just six minutes later after Di'angelo Jean Pierre scored off a 55 yard interception giving the AMCATS a 34-7 lead. The Owls would manage one more touchdown on the evening before Justin Brown closed out the scoring for the AMCATS with a 9 yard run to secure the AMCATS 41-13 victory over the Owls.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- The AMCATS are 2-0 against the Owls in their last two meetings.
- The AMCATS have won their last three season openers. (2022 and 2023 against Westfield).
- The AMCATS win marks the first time David Robinson opened up a season with over 100 receiving yards.
- D'Angelo Jean Pierre's pick six marks the first of his career.
COMING UP:
The AMCATS are back in action on Saturday, September 14th where they will host the Coast Guard Bears for a non-conference matchup. Opening kickoff is set for 12:00pm at Caparso Field in Paxton, MA.
