AMCATS Split with Fighting Scots

Auburndale, Florida – Anna Maria College split a doubleheader with Gordon College in non-conference baseball action at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Florida. AMC captured game one easily 10-4 but Gordon took the nightcap 4-3. The AMCATS record now sits at 2-4.

GAME 1 – Anna Maria 10, Gordon 4

Junior David Julian (Sterling, Mass.) and senior John Sullivan (Southbury, Conn.) led the way for the AMCATS with 2 RBI's each as the AMCATS routed the Fighting Scots 10-4 in game one.

Sullivan's RBI's came with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the first inning. With Carlos Ortiz (Worcester, Mass.) on third base Sullivan deposited a deep drive to center field for an early 2-0 lead.

Sophomore Julian Diaz (Providence, RI) and Julian added RBI's in the second and third innings respectfully and AMC would push the lead to 5-0 after three complete.

Ahead 5-1 in the sixth, Anna Maria would add a pair of insurance runs on a balk by the Gordon pitching staff and an RBI single to left field from Ortiz to increase the lead to 7-1.

Gordon would tack on a run in the top of the sixth with a home run off the bat of junior Travis Pullen.

Anna Maria would cross the plate three more times in the bottom of the sixth and Gordon would score a pair of garbage runs in the top of the seventh for the 10-4 final.

The game was stopped with two outs in the top of the seventh for a 30 minute rain delay.

Pitcher Joshua Creamer (Groveland, Mass.) pitched five strong innings allowing just one run while striking out two. The freshman picked up his first collegiate win and strikeout in the victory.

 

GAME 2 – Anna Maria 3, Gordon 4

Gordon scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Anna Maria in game two on the afternoon.

Anna Maria once again scored in the first inning. John Sullivan delivered a two-out RBI single to center field plating Joshua Creamer for the early 1-0 lead.

The teams were scoreless over the second and third inning. Anna Maria doubled the lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth on a David Julian RBI single down the right field line. In the sixth inning An RBI single by sophomore Andrew Monteverdi (Worcester, Mass.) pushed the AMCAT advantage to 3-0 heading into the bottom of the frame.

Through five complete AMC hurler Matthew Leahey (Rutland, Mass.) had held the Fighting Scots hitless and scoreless, that all changed in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Alonzo Martinez led off with a home run to left field. With two Scots on-base, Leahey was lifted for senior Lucas Davis (Spencer, Mass.). Davis surrendered the final three runs, lifting Gordon to the 4-3 victory.

Leahey pitched well for AMC, his final line read 5.1 innings, three earned runs, 3 walks and two strikeouts. Davis (0-2) was saddled with the loss.

Anna Maria returns to action on Friday when they will face WPI for a pair at Chain-O-Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Fla. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
