Mount Ida Drives to 17-4 Victory Over AMCATS

Paxton, Mass. – The Anna Maria College men's lacrosse team fell to the visiting Mustangs of Mount Ida College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon at AMCAT field. The loss drops the AMCATS to 3-11 overall and 1-5 in the conference while the Mustangs improve to 11-4 overall and 5-1 in GNAC play.

 

Prior to the game the AMCATS recognized team member, Timothy Austin (Babylon, N.Y.) for his three years of dedication to the program. Austin will be graduating in the fall.

 

AMCAT LEADERS

 

Freshmen Kyle Benning (Puyallup, Wash.) and Brandon Pavoni (Granby, Mass.) led the Anna Maria offense as they each tallied two points from one goal and one assist. Freshmen Hunter LaRochelle (Chicopee, Mass.) and Kurt Richardson (Narragansett, R.I.) each recorded a goal in the loss for the AMCATS. Kai Nero-Clark (Half Hallows, N.Y.) posted a team high three caused turnovers on the day while James Wieliczko (Holderness, N.H.) and LaRochelle collected four ground balls each.  Paul Schwarz (Staten Island, N.Y.) made an impressive 28 saves on the day.

 

MUSTANG LEADERS

 

Marcus Donahue and Peter Hardy led the visitors to victory as they combined for eight points, tallying four goals apiece. Chad Coehlo also notched four points on the day from three goals and an assist while Kyle Ton rounded out the leader board with four points from two goals and two assists. Alex Zito dominated in the circle winning 16 of 18 faceoffs. Cam Hayward earned the victory for Mount Ida making six saves. He moves to 10-4 on the season.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

 

Mount Ida started things up in the first period with three goals to take a 3-0 lead with 4:12 to play. The AMCATS found a spark with just seconds left in the period as Ryan Rockwal (Chicopee, Mass.) found Pavoni who fired a shot past Hayward to end the period, 3-1.

 

An unassisted goal from Peter Hardy gave the visitors a 4-1 lead with just five minutes off the clock in the second quarter. The AMCATS responded with 6:48 on the clock as Richardson notched his 20th goal of the season to tighten the score, 4-2. Marcus Donahue rounded up scoring for the half with a goal at the 3:54 mark and the Mustangs took the 5-2 lead into the break.

 

The third period was all Mount Ida as the visitors outscored the AMCATS 5-0 and extended their lead to 10-2. The Mustangs continued to put on the pressure and outscored the AMCATS 7-2 in the final quarter led by a two-goal effort from both Hardy and Donahue to take the final 12-4 victory.

Anna Maria College men's lacrosse hosts Norwich University on April 25th for a 5:00 p.m. GNAC contest to round up their home schedule. The Mustangs travel to Rivier University on the same day for a conference matchup starting at 7:00 p.m.
