Saint Joseph's Topples Anna Maria, 18-8

PORTLAND, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (4-7, 2-3 GNAC) snapped a three-game losing streak with an 18-8 victory over Anna Maria College (2-10, 0-4 GNAC) at Deering Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The conference rivals essentially swapped leads for the better part of the first half before junior Matt Donnell (Watertown, Mass.) and sophomore Dan Cunningham (West Islip, N.Y.) both hit pay dirt in the closing four minutes of the second stanza to provide the Monks with a 6-4 advantage heading into intermission.

Saint Joseph's came out firing in the third quarter and boasted the team's largest single-period scoring total – seven goals – of the year, as sophomore Michael Finn (Quincy, Mass.) tallied three goals to help the hosts secure a 13-6 cushion going into the final frame.

In the fourth quarter, the Monks outscored the AMCATS by a 5-2 margin – including four Finn strikes – en route to securing the 18-8 triumph.

THE KEEPERS

The Monks employed three goalies in the victory, as junior Connor Trainor (Franklin, Mass.) made seven stops in 47:54 minutes to earn his fourth win of the season, junior Wyatt Porter (Pittsfield, Mass.) was untested in 7:34 of play, and freshman Zachary Remillard (Manchester, N.H.) – making his collegiate debut - allowed a goal and made a save in 4:32 between the pipes.

Anna Maria sophomore keeper Paul Schwarz (Staten Island, N.Y.) made 18 saves in a losing effort.

MONK LEADERS

Finn scored a career-high seven goals – all in the second half – with five ground balls. Cunningham tallied three goals, three assists, and a pair of ground balls. Donnell chipped in with two goals and an assist with three ground balls. Sophomore Tyler Retalic (Framingham, Mass.) scored twice with two ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Junior Brendan Barrett (East Sandwich, Mass.) netted a goal with three assists and a pair of ground balls. Freshman Shane Fors (Gales Ferry, Conn.) won 14 face-offs with nine ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Raymond Emery (Abington, Mass.) added three ground balls with two caused turnovers

AMCAT LEADERS

Sophomore midfielder Ryan Rockwal (Chicopee, Mass.) scored three goals on six shots. Freshman attack Kyle Benning (Puyallup, Wash.)  tallied two goals and two assists with three ground balls. Freshman attack Brandon Pavoni (Granby, Mass.) netted a goal and picked up a team-high six ground balls. Freshman midfielder Tre Demers (Granby, Mass.) won 11 face-off attempts.

Both teams are back in action hosting conference foes Tuesday evening, when Saint Joseph's faces Lasell College in a 7:30 PM start and Anna Maria takes on Albertus Magnus College in a 5:00 PM opening face-off.
