Mitchell Competes in a Pair of Bowl Games

Paxton, Mass.- Senior placekicker Jamal Mitchel (Shelton, Conn.) competed in a pair of post-season bowl games earlier this month, the Aztec Bowl in Monterrey, Mexico and the National Bowl in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania.

Mitchell was among 42 top USA football players from 32 colleges who showcased their talents in the 40th Annual Aztec Bowl on December 14th in Mexico. The USA All-American Eagles defeated the ONEFA All Stars from Mexico University 49-29. Mitchell, a Liberal Studies major, was 4-for-5 on the night in extra points while blocking on special teams.

"The experience in Mexico was remarkable," said the four year AMCAT starter, "In three or four days you are trying to learn special teams' formations, adjust to your surroundings, introduce yourself to the players and develop as a team."

Joining Mitchell in Mexico was AMCATS' special teams coordinator and running backs coach Ryan Kelly. Kelly, coaching for the first time in Mexico, said of the experience, "It was nice to work with different coaches from across the country, it really was an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It is always special to represent your country."

The Aztec Bowl is a college Division II/III post-season bowl game that has been played intermittently since at least 1950.

Mitchell was also selected to play in the third annual National Bowl Game presented by East Preps on December 9th in Allentown, PA. The game featured eighty of the top college seniors in the nation. Jamal played on the Red Nation team that defeated the Blue Nation team 35-21. The senior was a perfect 3-for-3 on extra points and recorded one tackle on special teams.

What is next for Mitchell, "The two bowl games gave me the opportunity to get my name out there and for scouts to take a look, if nothing comes of it, it was still important to represent the Anna Maria College and get recognition for our football program across the country."

Mitchell, who lists winning the first game in 2011 against Becker as his favorite memory will graduate in May 2013.
