AMCAT Swept in Twinbill by Lasers

Worcester, Mass. – Lasell College came away with a pair of victories in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) baseball doubleheader vs. Anna Maria College, winning by a final score of 10-2 in seven innings and 9-2 in game two. The games were played at Rocheleau Field on the campus of Assumption College.

With the losses the AMCATS dip to 5-16 on the season and 2-8 in the GNAC, while Lasell improves to 10-9 overall and 5-3 in conference play.

GAME 1: Lasell 10, Anna Maria 2

The Lasers used a five-run first frame to propel past the AMCATS 10-2 in game one. With Lasell leading 5-0 in the third inning, Anna Maria cut the deficit to 5-1 in the bottom of the stanza when junior first baseman Corey Andrade (Mashpee, Mass.) singled in second basemen Joshua Creamer (Groveland, Mass.) who had reached on a Lasers error.

Lasell extended the lead back to five runs with a tally in the top of the fourth inning and then pushed across two runs in the visitors half of the sixth and seventh inning to stake a 10-2 advantage.

Anna Maria notched its second run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior David Julian (Sterling, Mass.) opened the frame with a double to deep left center and came around to score two batters later on a Corey McNair (Shrewsbury, Mass) single to right field.

The AMCATS were led by a two-hit effort from Matthew Leahey (Rutland, Mass), while senior starter Phil Weihn (Clinton, Mass.) suffered the loss in 5.0 innings of work and struck out four batters.

Hector Coscione (Newton, Mass.) led Lasell with three hits and four RBI, Bobby Ellard (Medfield, Mass.) also added three hits and two RBI. Billy Uberti (Newton, Mass.) scored three runs.

Junior Ryan Bowen (Hudson, Mass.) went the distance for the win, pitching seven strong innings allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts.

GAME TWO: Lasell 9, Anna Maria 2

Lasell posted a run in the second inning and four runs in the fourth to quickly take a 5-0 lead. With one out and the bases full of Lasers in the second inning, junior Kevin Post (Cromwell, CT) came home on a wild pitch by AMC's Tyler Stewart (Oxford, Mass.). Ellard and Dan Gagnon (Pomfret Center, Conn.) delivered RBI hits and the Lasers added two more runs on AMCAT miscues in the fourth.

Anna Maria plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth frame. John Sullivan (Southbury, Conn.) doubled to deep center field scoring Matthew Leahey and Corey Andrade. Andrade walked with one out and Leahey singled up the middle to set the table for Sullivan.

Lasell would counter in the top of the fifth scoring two runs to push the score to 7-2 and add single scores in the sixth and seventh for the 9-2 final.

Greg Sherman held the AMCATS to just three hits in the nightcap, while striking out six batters.

Stuart drops to 0-3 on the season, he faced 28 batters, allowing six earned runs with two k's.

Anna Maria will return to GNAC play on Saturday afternoon and host Johnson & Wales University for a doubleheader starting at noon at New Balance Field in Worcester, while Lasell will head to Massachusetts Maritime for a 9-inning match-up.
