AMCATS Swept by Engineers

Winter Haven, Fla. – The Anna Maria College baseball team dropped a pair of heartbreaking losses to WPI in non-conference Spring Break action in Florida on Friday afternoon. The 'Cats fell in the first game, 3-2 and WPI engineered a walk-off 8-7 victory in game two. Through eight games the AMCATS record sits at 2-6.

 

GAME ONE: Anna Maria 2, WPI 3

 

Over the first three innings neither team could muster much offense as the game was dominated from the mound. AMCATS hurler Lucas Davis (0-3) was masterful on the mound allowing just three runs on three hits and struck out seven. Trailing 2-0, AMCAT freshman Corey Andrade led off the fourth inning with a solo home run to left field. Second basemen Joshua Creamer plated the equalizer with a RBI infield single.

 

The Engineers would forge ahead 3-2 with a well-executed double steal with two-outs in the top of the sixth.

 

Andrade collected three hits in game one, while John Sullivan and David Julian had two apiece.

 

GAME TWO: Anna Maria 7, WPI 8

 

In game two Anna Maria wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Sullivan, continuing his torrid spring, singled up the middle for the games first RBI scoring Josh Creamer, who doubled in his at-bat. With the bases juiced, David Julian drew a two-out walk for the innings second run. WPI would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame.

 

Anna Maria added a single run in the top of the third, but WPI would take their first lead of the game 4-3 after three complete.

 

Trailing 6-5 in the top of the fifth, the AMCATS tied the game on a Joseph Fahey ground out. Anna Maria would regain the lead 7-6 with an RBI double to left field off the bat of Corey Andrade.

 

WPI would take the nightcap with a walk-off hit over the left fielder and win the game, 8-7.

 

Freshman Camden Frederick suffered the loss, tossing four innings, with five hits, four runs and two strikeouts.
