Baseball: AMCATS Swept by Albertus Magnus

The Anna Maria College baseball team was swept by Albertus Magnus College, 8-0 and 7-5 on Thursday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at West Haven High School. The Falcons improve to 7-6 on the year and 2-0 in GNAC play with the win, while Anna Maria falls to 3-10 overall and 0-2 in league play. 

GAME 1: Albertus Magnus 8, Anna Maria 0

Anthony Pellegrino (Branford, Conn.) allowed just two hits as the Albertus Magnus baseball team blanked Anna Maria College 8-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Thursday night in West Haven, Conn.

Pellegrino improved to 1-1 from the hill as he threw seven innings and did not allow a run.  He walked three and struck out three batters in the complete-game shutout.  Pellegrino also had two hits to help his own cause in the Falcons' sixth victory of the season.

Patrick Dornfried (Berlin, Conn.) added a 2-for-4 performance with two RBI and one run scored for the Falcons, while Jordan Kubilus (Cheshire, Conn.) was also 2-for-4 with two runs.

The Falcons put together a two-run fourth inning as Kris Daur-Schierholz (East Haven, Conn.) recorded an RBI fielder's choice, while Mike Saia (Bridgeport, Conn.) recorded a sacrifice fly out to center field.

Albertus added a six-run sixth inning to secure the conference victory.  In the frame Dornfried led the Falcons with a two-RBI single.

Joshua Creamer and David Julian collected the hits for the AMCATS.

Lucas Davis dropped to 0-5 on the year with tonight's game one loss as he allowed four runs on nine hits in five innings of work.

 

GAME 2: Albertus Magnus 7, Anna Maria 5

Albertus jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning led by a bases clearing double by Patrick Dornfried (Berlin, Conn.).  Kris Daur-Schierholz (East Haven, Conn.), who finished the contest 2-for-3 with 1 RBI, scored in the frame and knocked in one with a single through the left-side of the infield.

Anna Maria scored its first runs of the series with two runs in the top of the fifth inning.  John Sullivan walked to record an RBI, while David Julian added an RBI single to cut the Falcons' lead to 5-2.

The Falcons added two runs in the bottom of the frame led by a two-RBI single by Sage Leonard (Northford, Conn.).

The Falcons held a five-run advantage heading into in the final inning before Anna Maria began its late-inning rally, scoring three runs on two hits, before the Falcons recorded the last out of the ballgame.

Jordan Kubilus (Cheshire, Conn.) earned the win for the Falcons as he improved to 2-0 on the year.  Kubilus threw four innings as he allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits and two walks. He also struck out three.

Mike Barillaro (Meriden, Conn.) took the mound with two runners on in the fifth and recorded the first out on one pitch.  After two runs scored for the AMCATS, a fly out to center and a groundout to the pitcher got the Falcons out of the jam.

Daur-Schierholz took the hill in the seventh to close out the game for the Falcons. With two outs, Anna Maria strung together a pair of doubles off the bats of Jonathan Roy and Corey McNair to plate 3-runs before a groundout to the pitcher ended the game.

Andrew Sawyer picked up his first loss of the season for Anna Maria as he fell to 2-1 on the year.  He allowed seven runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings of work. He also walked four and struck out three.  Corey McNair finished the contest 2-for-4 with two RBI for the AMCATS.

Anna Maria finally return home on Saturday afternoon, they will host Suffolk University for a GNAC doubleheader at noon at New Balance Field in Worcester, Mass.
