Johnson & Wales Sweeps Softball

WORCESTER, Mass.—The Anna Maria College softball team was swept by the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University on Saturday by scores of 8-1 and 12-0 at Clark University's O'Brien Field.

The wins boost the Wildcats to 24-7 overall and 12-3 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action, while Anna Maria falls to 4-25 and 2-14 in league play.

GAME ONE – JOHNSON & WALES 8, ANNA MARIA 1

Johnson & Wales' starting pitcher Jennifer Corona (Middle Island, N.Y.) gave up just one hit in six innings of work. She faced just five batters over the minimum before giving way to Alex Fantasia (Framingham, Mass.) who walked a batter and saw her come around to score on a double by Anna Maria's Taylor Gould (Storrs, Conn.) in the seventh inning.

The Wildcats scored all their runs in pairs beginning with two runs in the top of the first inning. They added another pair in the third inning and then scored four runs over the sixth and seventh innings.

Designated player Emily Schaper (Pompton Lakes, N.J.) cranked a two-run homerun to right-center in the seventh inning. She finished with a game-high three RBI after also driving in a run in the third inning.

Leadoff batter Brenna DuPerry (Cranston, R.I.) and centerfielder Diana Amendolara (Newton, Pa.) both finished two hits apiece. As a team, Wildcats compiled eight hits.

Alexis Romano (Lowell, Mass.) took the loss for Anna Maria, scattering seven hits and seven runs (three earned) over six innings of work.

GAME TWO – JOHNSON & WALES 12, ANNA MARIA 0 (FIVING INNINGS)

Johnson & Wales exploded for 16 hits in the nightcap as eight of the nine Wildcat starters recorded at least one hit over the five-inning game.

After a scoreless first inning, the Wildcats scored twice in the second inning to take the lead. They would score 10 more runs over the next three innings.

DuPerry batted 3-for-4 with two RBI from the leadoff slot while third baseman Meghan Gavin (Wallingford, Conn.) finished 3-for-3 with one RBI.

The Wildcats also saw two hits apiece from Kristen Solari (Old Bridge, N.J.), Emily Gorecki (Bremerton, Wash.), Amendolara and Alex Fantasia (Framingham, Mass.).

Sophomore centerfielder Jacqueline Lapierre (Worcester, Mass.) batted 2-for-2 for Anna Maria. The AMCATS third hit came from Hannah Trudo (Pomfret Center, Conn.), who pinch-hit in the seventh inning.

Noelle Weiss (Hartland, Wisc.) pitched three innings of scoreless softball for Johnson & Wales and surrendered just one hit, but Emily Gundrum (Bethlehem, Pa.) took the win for the Wildcats, scattering two hits, a walk and two strikeouts over the final two innings of action.

Senior Angela Vousboukis (Swampscott, Mass.) pitched a complete-game for Anna Maria, giving up 16 hits, 12 runs (10 earned), and no walks.

Anna Maria is back in action tomorrow when they travel to Rivier University for a noon doubleheader. Johnson & Wales hosts Simmons tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
