Blue Jays Sweep Softball in Night time Doubleheader

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass.—Senior Patti Sciglimpaglia (Norwalk, Mass.) batted 5-for-7 with a triple and a homerun and threw 11 strikeouts in game one to lead the University of Saint Joseph softball team to a 9-0, 8-0 sweep of Anna Maria College in Wednesday night's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader.

The pair of victories pushes USJ to 12-4 on the season, while Anna Maria falls to 2-13 with the losses.

GAME ONE – ST. JOSEPH 9, ANNA MARIA 0 (SIX INNINGS)

Patti Sciglimpaglia finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI in the game one victory. In the circle, she faced just four batters over the minimum on two hits and two walks while striking out an impressive 11 batters.

Both of Anna Maria's hits were singles by junior catcher Marissa Pingeton (Worcester, Mass.).

AMCAT pitcher Angela Vousboukis (Swampscott, Mass.) went the distance in the circle, scattering 16 hits, six earned runs and a strikeout over six innings.

In addition to Patti Sciglimpaglia, the Blue Jays saw two hits each from Sarah Ercoli, Mary Sciglimpaglia, Kara Klimaszewski, Vigue, and Ashley Tucker. All nine batters in the USJ lineup recorded at least one hit.

The game was scoreless through two full innings until USJ took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third as Ercoli led off the inning with a double and then scored on a single by Patti Sciglimpaglia. The score remained the same until the Blue Jays tallied five hits and capitalized on three AMCAT errors to score six runs in the top of the fifth. The game concluded with an additional two runs in the top of the sixth.

GAME TWO – ST. JOSEPH'S 8, ANNA MARIA 0 (FIVE INNINGS)

The Blue Jays carried their momentum into the second game as they scored three runs in the top of the first inning, using a single by Ercoli and a triple by Patti Sciglimpaglia top score the first run of the game. USJ tallied five hits in the first inning.

The visitors added three more runs in the second inning and single scores in the third and fourth innings to force a mercy-rule decision with an 8-0 lead.

USJ totaled 12 hits. Ercoli, Patti Sciglimapglia, Mary Sciglimpaglia and Isabella Russo all finished with two hits apiece. In the top of the fourth, Patti legged out an inside-the-park home run to left field.

Sophomore Jacqueline Lapierre (Worcester, Mass.) finished 2-for-3 for Anna Maria. Kathryn Rendock (Windsor, Conn.) also tallied a hit.

Junior Alexis Romano (Lowell, Mass.) took the loss in the circle for Anna Maria, scattering seven hits and four earned runs in 1.1 innings of work. Freshman Ally Hamelin (Greenfield, Mass.) gave up five hits, three runs, and struck out three in 3.2 innings of relief.

Danielle Circosta earned the win for USJ, scattering three hits, one walk, and six strikeouts in five complete innings.

Anna Maria hosts Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Saturday in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader. Game one is slated to begin at noon at Holy Cross's Freshman Field.
