Colby-Sawyer charges past Anna Maria for TCCC victory

PAXTON, Mass. (04.02.11) – The Colby-Sawyer College men's tennis team captured their first victory of the season with a 9-0 victory over Anna Maria College in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference match at Paxton Sports Centre on Saturday night. The win improves the Chargers to 1-4 (1-3 TCCC) on the season, while the loss drops the AMCATS to 1-6 (0-5 TCCC).

Sophomore Adam Whitman (Newcastle, N.H.) teamed-up with senior Rob Barnes (Wayland, Mass.) to get the Chargers started with an 8-4 victory in No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Reeve Fidler (Groton, Mass.) and junior Will Berry (Berlin, Vt.) followed with an 8-1 win from the No. 2 doubles slot, while Junior Eric Caples (Billerica, Mass.) and freshman Matt Trombley (Castleton, Vt.) combined for an 8-4 victory in No. 3 doubles action.

The best match of the day came in No. 2 singles where AMC sophomore Adam Williamson (Spencer, Mass.) locked-up with CSC's Robert Barnes. Williamson took the first set 7-5, before Barnes rallied to take the second set 6-3. An exciting third set tie breaker finally decided the match with Barnes battling to an 11-9 win. Whitman earned a 6-4, 6-3 win in No. 1 singles play, while Berry took No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-1. Fidler, Caples, and junior Zac Skyrme (Norwich, Vt.) earned flawless 6-0, 6-0 victories to complete the sweep for the Chargers.

The Chargers return to action on Tuesday when they host Curry at 8:00 pm, while the AMCATS take to the courts again on Wednesday, welcoming Eastern Nazarene to the Paxton Sports Centre for a TCCC match starting at 6:00 pm.
