Bears swing past AMCATS in season opener

PAXTON, Mass. (03.16.11) – The Bridgewater State University men's tennis team swept singles competition as they defeated Anna Maria College by a score of 8-1 at the Paxton Sports Centre on Wednesday night. The match marked the season opener for both clubs, as the Bears jump out to a 1-0 start to the season, while the AMCATS fall to 0-1.

The AMCATS started the match off on the right foot, as sophomore David Bourget (Winter Park, Fla.) and junior Adam Williamson (Spencer, Mass.) combined for an exciting 9-7 victory in No. 1 doubles action.

However, that proved to be AMC's lone victory of the night. Bridgewater State senior Nicholas Amrose (Arlington, Mass.) and freshman Cody Farrell (Scituate, Mass.) paired-up for an 8-6 win at the No. 2 doubles slot, while freshmen Jesse Gotlib (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Joao Machado (Newton, Mass.) took No. 3 doubles by the score of 8-0.

The Bears road their momentum into singles competition where they swept all six matches. Senior David Campbell (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) and junior Mike Zagame (Uxbridge, Mass.) earned victories in No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, while sophomore Nicholas Desisto (Uxbridge, Mass.) posted a 6-1, 6-2 win from the No. 3 singles slot. Gotlib was victorious from the No. 4 position, while Farrell and Amrose each earned flawless 6-0, 6-0 wins to complete the sweep.

The Bears return to action this Friday on the road versus Clark, while the AMCATS take to the courts again on Saturday at noon when they hit the road to battle Wentworth.
