Anna Maria drops conference match to Hawks

PAXTON, Mass. (03.23.11) – The Roger Williams University men's tennis team defeated Anna Maria College by a score of 8-1 in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference contest at the Paxton Sports Centre on Wednesday night. It was the conference opener for the Hawks, who now improve to 4-5 (1-0 TCCC) on the season, while the loss drops the AMCATS to 0-3 (0-2 TCCC).

The Hawks built an early 3-0 advantage by sweeping the doubles competition. Senior Dan Kleitz (Wethersfield, Conn.) and sophomore Jonathan Chandler (East Falmouth, Mass.) teamed-up to take No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-4, while juniors Jeff DeNunzio (Barrington, R.I.) and Spencer Withington (Plymouth, Mass.) earned an 8-1 win in No. 2 doubles action, and the duo of sophomores Jason Pacino (North Reading, Mass.) and Nate Rohman (Topsham, Maine) combined for a flawless 8-0 victory from the No. 3 doubles slot.

DeNunzio went on to earn a 6-3, 6-4 win for the Hawks in No. 1 singles, while Anna Maria junior Adam Williamson took No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-2 for the AMCATS' lone point on the night. The rest of the Hawks cruised through the remaining singles matches as Pacino, Withington, Webster, and Chandler each captured unblemished 6-0, 6-0 wins.

Both teams return to conference action this Saturday when the Hawks host Eastern Nazarene at 1:00 pm and the AMCATS welcome Regis College for a 6:00 pm match at Paxton Sports Centre.
