Mustangs Bolt Past AMC 4-2

PAXTON, Mass. (10.8.11) – The Mount Ida Mustangs men's soccer team defeated the Anna Maria AMCATS 4-2 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match-up on Saturday night at AMCAT Field.  With the win, Mount Ida improves to 4-7 (3-4 GNAC), while Anna Maria falls to 2-12-1 (0-6 GNAC) on the year.

The Mustangs stormed out of the gates early, scoring on their first three shots of the game.  They started the scoring in the 3rd minute of play when Carlos Rojas (Stamford, Conn.) drilled a direct kick from 30 yards out that sailed into the back of the net.

A minute later, Dishawn Miller (Bristol, Conn.) blasted on a one-timer on a Steve MacDonald (Medford, Mass.) pass from the right-wing.  MacDonald would later add the last goal of the half on a nicely placed shot from the right wing that sailed into the back left corner of the goal.

Justin Hyland (Leicester, Mass.) had a couple of nice scoring opportunities near the net, however, goaltender Mat Pils (Monroe, Conn.) made a pair of nice break-ups to turn away Highland and preserve the 3-0 lead heading into half-time.

In the 54th minute of play the AMCATS were forced to play a man down when one of their players was ejected from the game after receiving a red card.  Despite being a man down, Bryan Blomgren (Auburn, Mass.) drilled his 2nd goal of the year and cut the lead to 3-1.

After that point, the game was a stalemate until the 78th minute when Joseph Casey (Merrimack, Mass.) pushed the Mustang lead back to 4-2 with an unassisted tally.

On the offensive all day, Justin Hyland scored his fourth goal of the year in the 88th minute to try and spark the AMCAT comeback.  It was too little; too late as Mount Ida went on to win the match 4-2.

Mat Pils earned his fourth win in net for the visitors while the loss drops Mike Dandurand (Warwick, R.I.) to 1-8-1 on the year.

Anna Maria continues GNAC play on Monday when they travel to Albertus Magnus at 1:00 pm.
