Tennis Falls to Albertus Magnus 6-3 in Season Finale

PAXTON, Mass.—The Albertus Magnus College women's tennis team defeated host Anna Maria, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Paxton Sports Centre.

DOUBLLES

The Falcons got off to a quick start, taking two of three in doubles play. At No. 2, the Albertus Magnus tandem of freshman Izza Sabino and sophomore Kelsea Wildman cruised to an 8-2 triumph. The win was the eighth of the year for the pair as they continued their impressive fall campaign. The other Falcon victory came from the Falcon duo of sophomore Shamain McAllister and freshman Kiana Vega who also cruised to an 8-2 win at No. 3.

Nicola Zamira (Mashpee, Mass.) and Callie Mulcahy (Charlton, Mass.) took an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles over the Falcon duo of Zaida Velazco and Alicia Weaver.

SINGLES

In singles play, Albertus Magnus took each of the top-four matches in straight sets to seal the victory. At No. 1, junior Zaida Velazco won her match, 6-3, 6-1, while freshman Alicia Weaver (Bethel, Conn.), Sabino and Wildman each won at No. 2, 3 and 4, respectively.

The AMCATS saw a big win from senior Freya Sprous (Ware, Mass.) in the No. 5 slot. Sprous, the lone senior on the AMCAT tennis team, played in the team's final match today to culminate a four-year career.

ALBERTUS RECORDS

With their first road conference win of the fall, the Falcons improve to 7-5 overall and 2-4 in league play.

The seven wins tie a program record and are the most for Albertus Magnus since 1992. The victory also helped the Falcons qualify for the GNAC Championship Tournament for the second time in program history with their first appearance coming in 2013.

SEASON FINALE

Today's loss sealed the fate for the AMCATS, who needed a victory to qualify for the 2015 GNAC Tournament. The team sees their season come to a close at 3-9 overall and 0-6 in league play.
