Tennis Downs Trailblazers, 5-4

PAXTON, Mass. – The Anna Maria College women's tennis team downed the Trailblazers of the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts 5-4 on Thursday afternoon at the Paxton Sports Center.

With the win, the AMCATS improve to 3-7 on the season, while the loss drops the Trailblazers to 6-7. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

The AMCATS got ahead quickly with back to back wins in doubles matches putting them ahead 2-0 to start the day. The Trailblazers kept the game close with back and forth victories throughout singles play, but the AMCATS would never give up their lead. Senior AMCAT Freya Sprous (Ware, Mass.) sealed the win with a singles victory over Ashley Juskhas (Westfield, Mass.) at No. 5 singles.  

DOUBLES

The AMCATS opened the match by taking two of three doubles matches. Jessica Gautieri (North Attleboro, Mass.) and Nicola Zamira (Mashpee, Mass.) paired up for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles, while Callie Mulcahy (Charlton, Mass.) and  Marrissa Leonard (Billerica, Mass.) took an easy 8-2 win as the No. 2 pair.

The Trailblazers' lone doubles victory came at number three where Anna Despart (Castelton-on-Hudson)  and Rebecca Waterhouse (Fairport, N.Y.) notched an 8-0 win over Sprous and junior teammate Jess Palmer (Sutton, Mass.).

SINGLES

The AMCATS also saw wins by Gautieri at No. 1 singles, Mulcahy at No. 3 singles and Sprous at No. 5 singles.

Anna Maria returns to action on Monday, October 12th as they travel to the University of Saint Joseph in Hartford, Connecticut for a 1:00 p.m. Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup. This match concluded the Trailblazers' season.
