Softball Stumbles at Lasell, 1-0 and 2-1

AUBURNDALE, Mass.—The Anna Maria College softball team battled the Lasers of Lasell College to a pair of close games, but ultimately suffered 1-0, 2-1 losses in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

Lasell 1, Anna Maria 0

Lasers pitcher Eileen Bergin pitched a two-hitter en route to her fourth win in the circle this season. She walked just one batter and fanned six in the complete-game shutout effort.

Anna Maria junior catcher Lindsay Bond (Webster, Mass.) tallied both AMCAT hits. Senior pitcher Nichole Lowe (Saugus, Mass.) scattered 10 hits and one earned run while striking out three. She did not walk a single Lasell batter.

The Laser's lone run was scored in the bottom of the fifth inning on a solo homerun by Emily DeAngelis. It was one of two hits on the day for DeAngelis; Laura McLeod, Ashley Gatchell and Erin Smith also had two-hit performances for Lasell.

Lasell 2, Anna Maria 1

Anna Maria opened the second game by scoring in the top of the first inning, but Lasell answered with a run in the third and fifth innings to take the 2-1 win.

Junior Elizabeth Haggerty (Charlton, Mass.) opened the game with a double to left field and was pushed to third on a sacrifice-bunt by Jacqueline Lapierre (Worcester, Mass.). Cleanup batter Bond singled to shortstop to score Haggerty.

Lasell's equalizing run in the bottom of the third was unearned, as leadoff batter Ashley Gatchell reached on an error. She was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice play by Smith, who then stole second. The Lasers added two hits to push Smith across the plate.

The Lasers scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth as they strung together three hits, including an RBI double to left field by DeAngelis that scored Denise Archetto.

AMCAT pitcher Angela Vousboukis (Swampscott, Mass.) scattered eight hits and an earned run with no walks in six innings of work. She tallied four strikeouts in the day.

Krystal Enko earned the win in the circle for Lasell, allowing three hits, one earned run and one walk while fanning four.

In addition to Haggerty and Bond, the AMCATS received a hit from senior Justine Lalonde (Shirley, N.Y.).

The Lasers saw Archetto and Nichole Leblanc finish the game with 2-for-3 efforts at the plate.

Anna Maria is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Saint Joseph's College of Maine for a 3:00 p.m. GNAC doubleheader.
