Late Goal Lifts Salve Past AMCATS

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Salve Regina University men's soccer (12-5-1) scored twice in the second half to defeat Anna Maria College, 2-1, in a non-league meeting at Gaudet Field in Middletown, R.I.

Freshman midfielder Mark Marino (Smithfield, R.I.) corralled a loose ball after a Jacob Brigandi (Vernon, Conn.) free kick was deflected off the right post and Marino one-timed it into the net in the 86th minute for the go-ahead score. The goal was Marino's second of the season.

Marino's former high school teammate, sophomore Issa Demirgioglu(Smithfield, R.I.), scored the game-tying goal earlier in the second half, at 58:50. Freshman forward Andrew Chenard (Kingston, Mass.) assisted on the equalizer.

Freshman Jeffrey L'Heureux (Litchfield, N.H.) earned his second victory at goalkeeper after relieving starter Kyle Kureczka (Berlin, Conn.) at halftime. The only blemish on Kureczka's slate was a penalty kick scored by Anna Maria senior Enco Lika (Worcester, Mass.).

Salve Regina outshot the visitors, 24-to-1, and had 13 corner kicks compared to none for Anna Maria. AmCat keeper Andrew Dahl (Marlton, N.J.) made seven saves in the losing effort.
