
Choate Punches Out Ten In Split With Terriers
DAVENPORT, FL - On Saturday, March 15th the Anna Maria College baseball team faced the Thomas College Terriers for a doubleheader at the RussMatt Invitational in Davenport, FL. The AMCATS split with the Terriers winning game one 10-1 and losing game two 8-3.
Game One:
The AMCATS came out flying against the Terriers with a four run first inning, setting the tone for the rest of game one. Nick Choate kept the AMCATS momentum going with a pair of strikeouts in the bottom half of the inning to keep the Terriers scoreless. Neither team found home in the second inning, however the AMCATS came back in full force in the top of the third inning putting up 6 runs, taking a huge 10-0 lead just two and a half innings into the game. Nick Choate again kept the pressure on the Terriers in the bottom of the inning with three straight punch outs to keep Thomas scoreless.
Maintaining their lead, the AMCATS didn't give up a run to the Terriers until the fifth inning. Choate would end up punching out a total of 10 batters over the span of five innings for the AMCATS. Quinn Salvi stepped out on the mound in relief for the AMCATS, making his NCAA debut. Salvi punched out one batter with no runs scored during his inning for the AMCATS. Tyler Godin closed out the game with a pair of strikeouts to help the AMCATS lock in a 10-1 win over the Terriers.
Game Two:
After an explosive start in game one, the first three innings of game two would go scoreless as both teams defenses battled it out. The Terriers were the first to strike with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning, however the AMCATS answered back with three runs in the bottom half to take the lead over Thomas. Unfortunately the AMCATS would only score three runs in game two as the Terriers went on to score four runs in the top of the fifth inning followed by back to back single run innings in the sixth and seventh to secure an 8-3 win over the AMCATS.
Andre Denison and Alec Rich led the AMCATS hitting in game two, each going 2 for 3 with one RBI.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- The AMCATS finished their Florida trip with a record of 5-4.
- Jonathan Guardascione finished the last five games of the Florida trip batting .500 with 1 Homer and 5 RBIs.
- The AMCATS combined for 13 strikeouts in game one against the Terriers.
- Tommy Sasso continues to lead the AMCATS on offense with a .432 batting average with a team high of six doubles.
COMING UP:
The AMCATS will be back in action on Wednesday, March 19th where they will head to Buzzard Bay, MA to take on the Buccaneers of Mass. Maritime for a non-conference matchup. Opening pitch is set for 4:00pm.
