NJCU Gets the Best of Anna Maria

FORT MYERS, Florida – Wednesday was the last day of games for the AMCATS in Florida. The day started with a matchup against the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University. Though the teams were given a little extra time to wake up due to rain, the Knights got the best of AMC, winning in 5 innings, 14-1.

For the AMCATS, leadoff hitter Jacqueline Lapierre (Worcester, Mass) had two hits on the day, both singles, and she scored a run. Sophomore Annie Melanson (Grafton, Mass) reached base twice yet didn't record an official at-bat as she walked twice. On her birthday, junior Sabrina Carreira (West Hartford, Conn) drove in the lone run for the 'Cats, going one-for-three at the plate. Senior Hannah Trudo (Pomfret Center, Conn) had the only other hit in the game for the AMCATS.

The Gothic Knight offense consisted of three multi-hit performances, including three-hit games from Juliana Squeo and Kayla Clarke. With two hits in the game was Gianna Benacquista. Squeo drove in four of the NJCU runs and scored a run of her own. Both of Benacquista's hits were extra bases, one being a double, the other a home run. She also scored three runs.

The game started off well for the AMCATS as they scored in the top of the first when Carreira drove in Lapierre to take the 1-0 lead. But, in the bottom of the first any momentum the 'Cats gained was gone in a flash as the Knights scored four runs, including Benacquista's solo shot over the centerfield fence.

After that, it was all Gothic Knights as the AMCATS would fail to score another run in the game and NJCU would add two runs in the second, five in the third and three more in the fourth. Anna Maria would get their at bats in the fifth to try and come back and could not ending the game 14-1 in favor of New Jersey City.
