Women's Hockey Defeated By SUNY Canton, 3-1

CANTON, NY - Despite a late third-period goal from Meghan Sonia (West Tisbury, MA), SUNY Canton held on for the 3-1 victory Saturday afternoon at the Roos House Athletic Center.

BASICS

  • Date: February 15, 2020
  • Score: SUNY Canton Roos 3, Anna Maria College AMCATS, 1
  • Records: SUNY Canton (7-15-1), Anna Maria College (2-18-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Anna Maria had multiple chances to get on the board first as they peppered Roos goalie, Brooke Susac (Bowmanville, ON) with six shots but were turned away each time. However, the Roos broke the scoreless tie at 14:20 when Alexa Parigi (Nutley, NJ) corralled a Breanna Bedborough (Brampton, ON) to send her shot past AMCATS netminder, Julia Smith (Chillwack, BC)
  • In the second quarter, neither school saw the back of the net and the Roos had plenty of chances to score hammering Smith with 30 shots but were rejected each time. Anna Maria's defense also shut down two SUNY Canton powerplay chances to keep the deficit at one heading into the third.
  • Early in the third (4:51), SUNY Canton notched their second goal off the stick of Maggie Convery (Commerce Township, MI) when she received a pass from Meaghan Best (Whitby, ON). Despite being down two, Anna Maria cut the lead in half when Sonia handled a Kaitlyn Korpach (North Battleford, SK) pass and the puck in the back of the net to make it 2-1.
  • Julianna Acosta (North York, ON) quickly almost evened the contest at two, but her shot was saved by Susac to keep the one-goal lead intact. At 12:21 the Roos put the game away for good when Lily Cullen (Churchville, NY) found the puck from a Micayla Macintyre (Fall River, NS) pass which snuck by Smith for the 3-1 score.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Sonia's goal today was the first of her collegiate career.

  • Riley Cote (Tewksbury, MA) led the AMCATS with five shots. Sonia, Alyssa MacDonald (Nanaimo, BC), and Korpach rounded out the top-three shot takers with three, two, and two respectively.
  • For the hosts, Susac stopped 15 shots in today's contest.
  • Although SUNY Canton had three powerplays compared to Anna Maria's one, the Roos could not capitalize on those chances.
  • SUNY Canton outshot Anna Maria by a 62-15 margin.
