Women's Hockey Falls At Salem State, 5-0

SALEM, MA - After returning from winter break, the Anna Maria College women's hockey team (2-9-1) fell to the Salem State University Vikings (SSU) (3-11-1), 5-0 Wednesday evening at Rockett Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The AMCATS had a great chance to get on the board early when they earned a powerplay almost seven minutes in. Grace Dodge (St.Paul, MN) had a shot on net but was turned away by Vikings goalie, Sarah Plourde (Hooksett, NH).
  • However, shortly after the powerplay ended, SSU got on the board first after Mackenzie Mallett (York, ME) capitalized on a breakaway after she put the puck past Anna Maria goalie, Julia Smith (Chillwack, BC). The Vikings tacked on one more goal in the period courtesy of Carolyn Mahoney (Melrose, MA) for the 2-0 lead after one.
  • SSU did most of their damage when they put up a three-goal second-period lead by Ally Webster (Hanson, MA) who scored only 1:57 into the period. Other Vikings that scored in the period included, Vanessa VanBuskirk (Winthorp, MA) and Rose Sullivan (Charlestown, MA) at 11:40 and 16:58 respectively.
  • Anna Maria's defense buckled down in the third period as they did not allow SSU to score and the offense also picked up the pace. The AMCATS peppered Plourde with four shots that included three quick ones from Dodge, Sophia Zimmerman (Crystal, MN), and Sara Sammons (Western Australia, AUS) at the 8:40 mark.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Smith (1-4) got the start in net and recorded 41 saves which mark her second game with at least 40 saves (43-Nazareth, 11/8/19).
  • Tonight marked the collegiate debut of freshman forward, Sammons. She finished the night with three shots on net.
  • Dodge and Sammons paced the ACMATS offense with three shots. Riley Cote (Tewksbury, MA) and Zimmerman were the other AMCATS to take multiple shots (two).
  • Despite the 'CATS allowing seven powerplays, the defense held pat and did not let the Vikings capitalize (0-7).
  • Plourde collected 13 saves for the hosts.
