Raiders Steal One from Women’s Ice Hockey

NASHUA, NH: The Anna Maria College women's ice hockey traveled to Rivier University on Saturday evening for an Eastern Collegiate Hockey Alliance (ECHA) conference matchup at the Conway Arena.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Friday, January 27, 2023
  • Score: Anna Maria 1, Rivier 2
  • Records: Anna Maria AMCATS 2-15-2(1-3-1 ECHA) | Rivier 5-10-2 (2-1-2 ECHA)

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The AMCATS broke out to an early lead for the second straight game but couldn't hold on for the win. In this game, it was junior forward Shayla MacDonald (Victoria, BC) who broke the seal on the scoreboard late in the first period when the Raiders cleared the puck from their defensive end but sent the puck directly to senior defenseman Grace Dodge (St. Paul, MN) along the boards in the neutral zone. Dodge reversed the field by sending the puck cross-ice to MacDonald, who skated across the blue line, centered herself on the ice, and fired a wrist shot over the netminder's right shoulder that went off the crossbar and fell into the net. The goal was MacDonald's third of the season.
  • The Raiders scored both of their goals in the second period just under five minutes apart. The first goal was scored by Margaret Smith unassisted at 2:11 and the second was achieved on the power play at 7:01 by Brianna Rumptz who was assisted by Ellie Grady and Caeli Reed.
  • Senior goaltenders Sam Dahill (Littleton, MA) and Julia Smith (Chilliwack, BC) combined for 17 saves on 19 shots in the tough-luck loss.
  • The AMCATS did their best to try and get back into the game, more than doubling the opponents in total shots 39-19 but were stonewalled by the Raiders goalkeeper.
