Suffolk Takes Two against Softball, 13-5 and 6-2

BOSTON, Mass.—The Suffolk University softball team took two wins against the AMCATS of Anna Maria College on Wednesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action, take a 13-5 win in game one and a 6-2 win in the nightcap.

With today's results, the Rams improve to 9-5 overall and 5-1 in GNAC play, while the losses drop Anna Maria to 3-11 overall and 1-5 in league action.

The Rams totaled 19 hits, including nine in the fourth inning, to overcome an early 5-0 deficit to rally for 13-straight runs to claim the win.

The AMCATS totaled four of their six hits in the top of the first to score five runs. Sophomore Amy Clement (Townsend, Mass.), senior Justine Lalonde (Shirley, N.Y.) and freshman Amanda Lemire (Methuen, Mass.) all had an RBI apiece, while Kaitlyn Moran (Leicester, Mass.) totaled two RBI on a single. Anna Maria stranded three runs as the inning ended with a pop-up to first base.

Suffolk began their comeback in the bottom of the first as they added a single run on a sacrifice-fly to right field by Madison Eucalitto, which scored Kristen Young.

The Rams added two more runs in the bottom of the second and another in the bottom of the third to bring the score to 5-4.  

The hosts made their claim on the lead in the bottom of the fourth, as they opened the inning with a triple by Lindsay Pagano. The Rams followed the triple with six-straight hits, including a triple by Eucalitto to score three runners. Suffolk added two more hits before the inning would end, ultimately tallying seven runs on nine hits to take an 11-5 lead.

Suffolk added four hits and two runs in the bottom of the fifth to send the game via the eight-run mercy rule.

Ali Yamakaitis earned the win in the circle in relief for the Rams, as she pitched 4.1scorless innings and scattered two hits, three walks and struck out one. Sarah Chase earned the start and was pulled after facing 10 batters; she gave up four hits, five earned runs, three walks and struck out one.

Senior pitcher Nichole Lowe (Saugus, Mass.) took the loss for Anna Maria, scattering 19 hits and 11 earned runs. She did not walk a single Ram in the 32 batters she faced.

After three scoreless innings for both teams, the AMCATS took a 2-0 lead with single tallies in the top of the fourth and fifth innings, but Suffolk rallied for three runs in bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to take the 6-2 win.

In the top of the fourth, Moran tripled and was batted-in on a single by Clement. An inning later, Cristina Turley (Waterford, Conn.) opened the inning with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice ground-out by Elizabeth Haggerty (Charlton, Mass.), and scored as sophomore Marissa Pingeton (Worcester, Mass.) reached first base on an error by Suffolk's shortstop.

The Rams responded with an opening triple by Elissa Mogauro and three singles by Allison Loftus, Young, and Delaney Sylvester to score three runs to take the 3-2 lead.

Suffolk added another four hits to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 6-2 win.

Kathleen Slavin earned the win in the circle, scattering four hits, one earned run, and two walks while striking out 10.

Junior Angela Vousboukis (Swampscott, Mass.) took the loss, giving up 11 hits, six earned runs and no walks while striking out one.

The AMCATS will be back in action on Thursday as they travel to the University of St. Joseph for a 3:00 p.m. GNAC doubleheader. The games will be played at Albertus Magnus College.
