Baseball Roars Back in Ninth Inning to Take Down Curry

- Auburndale, FL: The Anna Maria baseball team defeated Curry College this afternoon in a nine inning thriller during the RussMatt Invitational.    

 THE BASICS:

- Date: 3/8/2020

- Score: Anna Maria 10, Curry 9

- Records: Curry (2-2), Anna Maria (3-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-  The AMCATS struck first in the top of the third after loading the bases on a walk, hit by pitch, and a single by Noah Holland (Sandwich, MA). the first run of the game came on a Kosta Drosidis (Holden, MA) single. The 'CATS would put two more on the board for a three run third.

-  Anna Maria pushed their lead to four on a Holland single to right field going into the bottom of the fourth inning.

-  The bottom of the fourth is when the train fell off the rails for the AMCATS defense as they allowed Curry to plate four runs in the bottom of the fourth and another five in the fifth. Of the Colonels nine runs, only two were earned after the visiting squad committed three errors.

- After the fourth and the fifth innings Andrew Rodriques (East Providence, RI) came on to pitch for the AMCATS and shut Curry down for 3.1 innings not allowing a single hit which allowed the 'CATS to rally in the ninth inning. Adam Twitchell (Shrewsbury, MA) started their biggest inning off with a double in the left field gap. The bases ended up loaded again after Curry committed an error and then gave a free pass on a walk. The next batter was Greg Gehring (Southold, NY) who ended up being a beneficiary of the Florida clay singled to the third basemen to score Twitchell. Two more would come across on a double from Fili Veras (Sleepy Hollow, NY) to be down just one at 8-9. The AMCATS would retake the lead on a pinch hit single from Jarrrod Marifiote (Framingham, MA) that would plate another two runs to put them up 10-9.

- The Colonels would get in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth, but Brock Eskildsen (Murrieta, CA) came in and closed the game out and gained his first save of his career.   

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-  Ryan Williams was tagged with the loss after blowing the save in the ninth.

-  Rodriques picked up his first win after going 3.1 innings with 0 hits allowed and 3 strikeouts.

-  Veras ended the game with 3 hits on 5 at bats with 3 RBI's.

- Marifiote went 1 for 1 and batted in the 2 game winning runs.
