Men’s Tennis Drops 6-3 Decision to Newbury

BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Newbury College men's tennis team defeated non-conference Anna Maria College, 6-3, Saturday afternoon.

The Nighthawks started strong taking two of three doubles matches, lead by partners junior Joey Verdon (Catskill, N.Y.) and first year Christian Repunte (Burlington, Mass.) who improved to 3-0 on the young season with the second doubles sweep 8-0. Third doubles partners sophomore Antonios Tran (Chelsea, Mass.) and junior Wayne Gethers (Cambridge, Mass.) moved to 2-1 with their 8-1 victory over the AMCATS. Gethers reaches a Newbury Men's Tennis milestone collecting his 20th career win.

Anna Maria was able to salvage a first doubles victory with sophomore Dillon George (Holden, Mass.) and junior Calvin Weeks (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) with an 8-0 sweep and improving to 4-1 on the year.

In singles action, three Nighthawks got their first victories of the season as Newbury took four of the six matches. Senior Steve Carey (Andover, Mass.), Verdon, and first year DaRay Ross (Laurel, Md.) all grabbed their first singles match victories of 2014. Carey defeated George Kiritsy (Holden, Mass.) in fourth singles 6-2, 6-1 to move to 1-2 overall. Verdon also improved to 1-2 with a third singles win over Tim Patenaude (Monson, Mass.) 6-2, 6-4. Ross earned his first collegiate tennis win with a sixth singles victory 6-1, 6-0 over Eric Boll (Millbury, Mass.). Tran continued his stellar play on the hard-court for Newbury moving to 3-0 on the year with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Weeks in second singles.  

The AMCATS grabbed two singles matches from the Nighthawks with George sweeping first singles 6-0, 6-0 over Repunte. With the win George remains undefeated in 2014 moving to 5-0. First year Tyler Crabb (Wareham, Mass.) defeated sophomore Gabe Marcolini (Newbury, Mass.) in fifth singles 6-2, 6-3.

Newbury improves to 2-1 on the season while Anna Maria falls to 1-4. The Nighthawks will be back in action next Tuesday April 1st when they open New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action against Wheelock College at 3:30 p.m. The AMCATS return to the courts on Monday March 31st when they travel to Curry College for a 3:30 p.m. in Milton, Mass.
