Schwarz Sets Program Record in Collegiate Debut, Men's Lacrosse Falls to Curry, 19-2

MILTON, Mass.—Freshman Paul Schwarz (Staten Island, N.Y.) set an Anna Maria College men's lacrosse program record for saves in a game in his collegiate debut, tallying 34 saves in the AMCATS' 19-2 loss to the Colonels of Curry College in Saturday's season opener for both teams.

PROGRAM RECORD

Schwarz's 34 saves bested the previous record of 25 saves, set last season by teammate Joseph Morris (Medford, Mass.) in the team's loss to Regis College. Schwarz faced 53 shots and stopped 64.2 percent of them.

AMCAT LEADERS

Anna Maria's two goals were netted by sophomore Daniel Rinkus (Harwinton, Conn.) and freshman Zachary Bryant (Saco, Maine) in the second and fourth quarters, respectively. As a team, the AMCATS totaled 23 shots, 14 of which were on-target. Bryant totaled a team-high 12 shots, 10 of which were on-net.

Sophomore Andrew Marcotte (Plainville, Mass.) added four shots, while freshman Ryan Rockwal (Chicopee, Mass.) added three.

Five different members of the squad took turns at the face-off, with Timothy Austin (Babylon, N.Y.) recording two wins and Hunger Hoag (Pittsfield, Mass.) tallying one.

CURRY LEADERS

Matt Serra paced the Colonels with six goals and two assists, followed by Devin Newell with three goals and five assists. Nine different players scored in the win for the Curry.

Midfielder Steven Grogan posted a game-high 10 groundballs while also winning 15-of-16 face-off attempts.

Curry goaltender Josh Teller stopped 12 of the 14 shots he faced in a the complete-game effort.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Curry scored the first four goals of the game on the strength of four different goal scorers. The first quarter was capped by a goal by Serra with 27 seconds left in the frame. The Colonels added three more goals to open the second quarter until Rinkus netted an unassisted tally to put Anna Maria on the board. A four-goal stretch would close out the first half, 11-1 in favor of Curry.

The third quarter saw Curry score seven unanswered goals from seven different players. Anna Maria scored their second tally midway through the fourth quarter, and Curry's Ed Johnson ended the game with a final goal at the 42-second mark.

FINAL COMPARISONS

Curry held advantages in most categories and held 45-22 edge in groundballs. Anna Maria had 34 turnovers to Curry's 22.

The Colonels finished 22-for-26 on clear attempts, while Anna Maria was successful on 14-of-23. Curry also won 20 out of the 23 face-offs on the day.

The AMCATS had six man-up opportunities on the day but were unsuccessful on all of them. Curry finished 2-for-5 with the extra-man advantage.

WHAT'S NEXT

The AMCATS host Wheelock College on Thursday, March 3^rd for the first of a three-game home stand. The team will also host Nichols on Saturday and Lyndon State on Tuesday, March 15^th.
