Raiders Run to 22-1 Victory over AMCATS

Paxton, Mass. – Freshman attack Colby Larsen (Windham, NH) scored five goals and added two assists to lead the Rivier University men's lacrosse team past visiting Anna Maria, 22-1, on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at AMCAT Field.

 With the victory the Raiders improve to 8-5 on the year and 2-3 in conference action, while the AMCATS drop to 1-11 overall and 0-4 in league play with their eighth straight setback.

 
AMCAT LEADERS

The AMCATS were led offensively by freshman Nicholas Cesarski (New Fairfield, Conn.) with the loan goal for the home team. Freshman attack Zachary Bryant (Saco, Maine) took nine shots for the AMCATS. Goalkeeper, Paul Schwarz (Staten Island, N.Y.) tallied 17 saves in the loss.

 
RIVIER LEADERS

The Raiders saw goals from 12 different players. Larsen lead the team with five goals and two assists on the day while freshmen Robert Fullerton (Wilmington, Mass.) and Nick Wolfrom (Pelham, N.H.) each tallied three goals. Sophomore attack Joe Kelland (Watertown, Mass.) and sophomore midfielder Ryan Coombs (Derry, N.H.) added to the scoring with two goals each. Other contributors included Eric Guinasso (Pelham, N.H.), Tyler Tambouris (Hooksett, N.H.), Isaiah Arteage (West Hartford, Conn.), Sean Brady (Tewksbury, Mass.), Kyle Graham (Londonderry, N.H.), Chris Pennie (Wilmington, Mass.) and Liam Ryan (Dorchester, Mass.) who all tallied one goal for the Raiders.

Tambouris had a team high six ground balls as the raiders forced 22 AMCAT turnovers.

FACE-OFFS

The Raiders won all eight face-offs in the first quarter and recorded a final 16-25 victories in the circle. Pennie was dominant in the face-of circle, winning 10-of-17 and grabbing five ground balls. Tambouris also had a showing in the circle, winning 6-of-8 face-offs to go along with his game-high six ground balls. On the opposite side, senior Zachary Sylvia (Tiverton, R.I.) and sophomore Malik Griffith (Brooklyn, N.Y.) both won four face-offs for the AMCATS.

GOALTENDERS

Freshman goalkeeper Paul Schwarz made 17 saves in the loss. Clark Plummer (Londonderry, N.H.) earned the victory in net for the Raiders with 11 saves on 12 shots.  Freshman Matt Cloutman (Peabody, Mass.) made an appearance in net for Rivier in the fourth quarter, posting 2 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Rivier came out of the gates charging, scoring eight goals in the first quarter. During the spurt, Larson had three goals. With 31 seconds remaining in the period Larsen netted the eighth and final goal of the period for the Raiders on a pass from senior midfielder Kyle Graham.

During the second frame, Rivier once again outscored Anna Maria, 3-0, to take an 11-0 advantage into halftime. Just three minutes into the period the Raiders were called on a penalty and posted the ninth goal of the game on a man-down situation. Larsen and Brady netted the last two goals going into halftime.

It was in the third quarter that Cesarski found an open path to the net and scored the AMCATS lone goal of the game following two goals from Rivier. Graham and Tambouris netted the final two goals of the third period for the Raiders at the 2:12 and 1:02 marks.  That would end the scoring for the AMCATS as the away team dominated the last quarter with seven more goals.

The AMCATS travel to Emmanuel (Mass.) on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. conference game while the Raiders travel to Saint Joseph's College of Maine for a 7:30 p.m. conference matchup at Deering Memorial Stadium on Wednesday.
