Maritime College Defeats AMC 34-13

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 15, 2011) – The Maritime football team defeated the visiting Anna Maria AMCATS, 34-13, on Saturday in front of a great crowd at Reinhart Field during Homecoming weekend at SUNY Maritime College. The Privateers, winners of five straight, improve to 5-1 overall (3-0 ECFC), while Anna Maria falls to 0-6 (0-4 ECFC).

Sophomore Thomas Davis (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) scored two rushing touchdowns on the day to lead Maritime to the victory, including the first of the game on a 16 yard run with 10 seconds to go in the first quarter. On the AMCATS first offensive play from scrimmage shortly after, junior Thomas Boney (Jacksonville, Fla./University Christian) forced a fumble that was picked up by classmate Jeremy Garcia (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) and returned 18 yards for a touchdown as time ran out in the first. The Privateers led 13-0 after one quarter of play.

Davis scored again in the second quarter on a 22-yard run, senior Madison Leary's (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) PAT made the score 20-0. Neither team scored again the rest of the quarter, although Maritime was stopped just one yard shy of the endzone on the final play of the half.

In the second half, senior Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) ran in a one-yard touchdown for the only score of the third quarter. Anna Maria scored twice in the fourth quarter to cut the Privateer lead to 27-13, but Maritime ended the scoring on the day with a one-yard run by sophomore Gary Bigham (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles).

Spanopoulos led all rushers with 112 yards, while Davis ended with 94. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./JFK Catholic) was 5-for-10 in completions for 54 passing yards. Leary was 5-for-6 on PATs and missed a long 52-yard field goal in the first quarter that the wind had a factor on. On defense, junior Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) and senior Jonathan Carberry (New York, N.Y./New Utrecht) led the team with seven tackles apiece. Carberry had two for combined losses of eight yards, including a sack of seven yards.

Anna Maria was led by freshman Kevin Card on defense with a game-high 18 tackles. Junior Santino Simone was 13-for-26 for 121 yards with one pass TD to sophomore John LaMothe. Freshman running back Ken Wood led the team with 75 rushing yards and one touchdown.
