Men's Volleyball: AMCATS Fall to WildCats, 3-0

Providence, R.I. – Freshman Aseah Thomas (St. Thomas, USVI) led the Johnson & Wales University men's volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep over Anna Maria College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action on Tuesday night.

 

Thomas finished the match with 13 kills while junior J.J. Bessette (Coventry, R.I.) tallied 38 assists in the victory.  Senior Alex Viera (Bay Shore, N.Y) notched a team-best 13 digs for the Wildcats.

 

Anna Maria was paced by freshman Dylan Copeland (Haverhill, Mass.) and fellow classmate Michael Gaudelli (Hicksville, N.Y.) who finished with a combined 11 kills, 21 assists, and 13 digs.

 

In the first game, the Wildcats jumped out to a 16-11 lead; punctuated by a kill from Thomas with the assist going to Bessette. Anna Maria climbed back to 24-24 on a JWU attacking error, but the Wildcats scored the next two points to take the first set 26-24.

 

The next set saw the Wildcats jump out to a quick 19-11 lead, capped by a service ace from senior Henrique DeBrito (La Romana, D.R.). The AMCATS cut the lead to as little as 5, 23-18, but ended up falling 25-19.

 

The third set saw the Wildcats race out to a 21-13 lead and never looked back. The Wildcats sealed the victory with another Thomas kill on the assist from Bessette.

 

The win moves the Wildcats to 13-9 on the season, 5-4 in the GNAC, while the AMCATS fall to 1-12 overall and 0-8 in conference action.  JWU will return to action Thursday, March 27th when they host Wentworth in a non-conference contest at 7:00 p.m.
