Simone Named Co-Offensive Player of the Year by WAFA

Worcester, MA --- The Worcester Area Football Association has announced the 22nd Annual Steve "Merc" Morris All-Star Team as selected by the eight sports information directors of Worcester County.

The major award winners included senior quarterback Santino Simone (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) of Anna Maria and fourth-year signal caller Corey Spencer (Malden, MA) of Worcester State who shared Offensive Player of the Year honors.

Simone completed the 2012 campaign passing for 2322 yards and 12 touchdowns, while rushing for 512 yards and 8 touchdowns in leading the AMCATS to a 2-8 season. 

Senior linebacker Shaine Grogan (Dalton, MA) of WPI and defensive lineman Mike Stuppiello (Forked River, NJ) of Assumption both received Defensive Player of the Year accolades while fourth-year return specialist Graham Asum (Marlboro, MA) of Worcester State was honored as the Special Teams Player of the Year.

Worcester State head coach Brien Cullen earned his 12th honor as the Coach of the Year since 1992 for directing the Lancers to a 6-4 record this season.

Wide Receiver and return ace Kalif Raymond (Lawrenceville, GA) of Holy Cross earned the nod as the Offensive Rookie while defensive backs Danielle Reyes (Loxahatchee, FL) and Y-Kim Sheppard (Waterford, CT) of Becker and Worcester State, respectively, were both honored as the Defensive Freshmen of the Year.

For the AMCATS, senior Dom Concepcion and junior Robert Small were name first team selections while tight end Josh Sundquist earned second team honors. Chosen on the defensive side, junior Jordan Koehler was selected to the All-Star second team.

The Worcester Area Football Association All-Star Team is named in memory of Steve "Merc" Morris, the longtime Assistant Director of Athletics for Media Relations and Assumption Hall of Famer. Morris was a 1972 graduate of Assumption and was a member of the athletics staff for 39 years before he passed away in January of 2011.

In addition to being the founder of the Worcester Area Association All-Star Program, Morris was a tireless supporter of collegiate athletics in the Worcester Area and had a key role in the lives of thousands of student-athletes.
